The former Cornell player, head coach from 2004-09 and current defensive coordinator at Ohio State is going to cash in. He I being courted by Notre Dame, Penn State and Oklahoma. He was making $1.9 million but Oklahoma has offered $3 million and Penn State $3.2 Notre Dame is in the same ballpark. Now it's Ohio State's turn to step up to the plate. Moving on from Cornell paid off for Knowles, whose best Ivy League finish was 4-3. His final Cornell team was 2-8 and last in the Ivy league at 1-6.

I do not believe that Jim Knowles coaching record at Cornell should be a reflect of his true coaching acumen. After all, Coach Knowles has a better head coaching record at Cornell than two other legendary coaches, Bob Blackman, who is a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, as well as George Seifert, the two-time Superbowl winning coach and a future member of the NFL Hall of Fame.

Jim Knowles’ record at Cornell was 26-34 which is slightly better when compared to Bob Blackman’s Cornell record of 23-33 and George Seifert’s Cornell record of 6-18.

Congrats to Jim Knowles on his new $3MM contract as defensive coordinator at Penn State. He's a hard working coach and has done an unbelievable job since leaving Cornell for greener pastures.

My only concern is these are academic institutions that have lost their way. Penn State is a good school, but their singular focus on football has their priorities mixed up. Meaning our company is not planning to hire any PSU grads.

Given what transpired at Penn State in the past because of the misplaced values on the football program, and the relatively small punishment the school received, I cannot say I am in any way surprised by the university's misplaced values. I know Paterno was critical of Ivy League schools holding back college football even though he was a graduate of Brown, but in some ways it is nice that Ivy League doesn't place football too high up on a pedestal.

I find it curious that "the" OSU, which obviously is not short of resources, would not match this offer to a coach whose performance looks good, and on the other hand (assuming OSU made some counter offer) that Knowles would not prefer to stay with a team with a much better track record on the national pro level. Also, I don't see Franklin leaving PSU voluntarily any time soon, thus no step up forthcoming soon.

I don't think Jim Knowles is interested in becoming a head coach. Besides the money, Jim grew up in Philly and that may be one of the reasons for his move closer to home in PA. I am not a Penn State fan though and State College is basically in the middle of $#%&@!. So I don't really get the attraction to PSU.

Various stories suggest Knowles and the veteran defensive line coach at Ohio State did not get along, either personally or professionally. Knowles had the choice of Oklahoma or Penn State and the Philly native chose to return to his home state.
