Just 4 years ago they were D2 playing Southern Connecticut and University of New Haven. Vicky just schedule U New Haven, or Trinity. Lazy AD . I miss Tom Beckett. By the way , that most of her hires have sort of a Colgate affiliation.

I love to see New Haven come to the Bowl and play Yale. I would find that so much more interesting than Stonehill. Plus, UNH is loaded with D1 transfers and I think they would give Yale all they could handle

Not sure Stonehill is even eligible for FCS post season yet. They weren’t last year due to their recent transition from Div II.

Just checked, this is the last year of Stonehill’s NCAA reclassification period. They won’t become full members of the NEC until next season.

Sure wish we could reschedule the Mercer and Richmond series. Yale was always the most innovative Ivy when it came to scheduling pre Covid. Now we seem to struggle and have to settle for anyone with the same open date.

There's plenty of examples when an Ivy team scheduled a perceived "weak" opponent, yet the game turned out to be competitive.

Occasionally, we lose such games as well.

The Ivy League’s late start to the season hinders the scheduling of quality OOC opponents. By the third week of October most teams are in conference play.

Good point, SOE.
To that end, the four Ivy teams that play OOC in their "week 5" (which is week EIGHT for the rest of FBS/FCS) would be well-served to swap that OOC game with their week 4 Ivy game.
In Yale's case, that would push the Dartmouth game to one week later (Cornell vs. Harvard is the other week 4 league game).
Doing so would alleviate the current problem of finding teams that aren't already playing a conference schedule in their eighth week of their season.

Harvard needed overtime to beat Merrimack

Dartmouth has lost to Sacred Heart

Columbia and Cornell have lost to Georgetown

Penn needed overtime to beat Georgetown

Brown has lost to Stetson

I'm not recalling Yale or Princeton having an embarrassing OOC performance (although I'm happy to be reminded). And I expect Yale to do just fine against Stonehill. But if they don't take Stonehill seriously, they could end up on this list as well.

That's true SOE, but if I remember correctly, the games against Richmond and Mercer were Yale's fifth game those seasons. The difference is planning a schedule a few years ahead vs. last minute scrambling.

And there were other factors like making adjustments in order to schedule UConn.

If this was the cost of canceling the Mercer series to play Uconn in 2021 it was worth it. However, going forward I’m hoping for a return to more competitive scheduling by Yale. Two Patriot and one CAA opponent is a good formula to follow.

Also the Patriot League, with the addition of Richmond, now has one less OOC game to schedule. It’s going to get even harder for the Ivy League to schedule OOC opponents unless they move their season start to the first Saturday of September.

I am very sympathetic to the difficulty of scheduling out-of-conference games, which is just one of many reasons I support starting the Ivy football season the Saturday after Labor Day.

But it is always jarring to see an Ivy team play a college that I have literally never heard of. When Harvard football played Merrimack College and Princeton basketball played Incarnate Word, my first reaction was, "Are those even colleges?"

Since 1869, college sports have been about marketing the sponsoring university to the public.

We could have a long discussion about why HYP are the most famous universities in the world. I strongly believe one of the reasons is that, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when most Americans could barely name a single college outside of their state flagship university, HYP became famous not for educating the sons of Andover and Exeter and Lawrenceville, but for football.

There is a reason why, from coast to coast, the most popular college mascots are bulldogs and tigers. Even the Alabama Crimson Tide tip their hat to a predecessor in Cambridge.

We have benefited from marketing through football just as much as Michigan and Ohio State do today.

So it's a shock to see Yale play Stonehill or Harvard play Merrimack.

What's the marketing slogan at Arby's used to encourage buying their meat sandwiches? "You're the top of the food chain. Eat like it."

Here's my suggestion for Ivy League football: "You're the most famous universities in the world. Schedule like it."

Please, enough grumbling and grousing about playing Stonehill. It's perfect. It was meant to be. Look at Stonehill's crest where you will see its motto which begins "Lux et." There.

It was actually a heck of a game. Merrimack was up by 14 in the fourth quarter before Harvard finally turned on the juice and won in overtime.

IMHO, we look silly by bemoaning that teams are unworthy to be on the same field as us... and then either losing to them or beating them by the skin of our teeth.

But that's just me...

I watched the end of Harvard-Merrimack. You are absolutely correct. It was a terrific football game.

As I said above, it's very tough to schedule OOC when everybody else is starting conference play. Stonehill was available and they'll probably give us a good game. I get it.

But as I said, it is absolutely jarring to see an opponent that I have literally never heard of.

That was my reaction to Merrimack and Incarnate Word.

And I lived in Boston for a long time!

If I am located a half hour drive from your campus and I've never heard of your institution, that is jarring. I'll bet that there are not a dozen Division I colleges in America I've never heard of and one of them is taking Harvard football to overtime? What?!

I dated a woman Suzanne who lived in Woburn (pronounced "Woo-burn") who had a sister Kendra attending Stonehill. Wonderful Irish family. Every visit to their house was a party. So at least I've heard of Stonehill, though not for the usual reasons.

It took a final drive and field goal at the end for Ivy League tri-champion Dartmouth to survive at Merrimack last fall.

Apples and oranges. Sagarin rated Merrimack #207 last season. Stonehill was rated #258.

Admittedly, Merrimack was a last-minute replacement for the Army cancellation.

But after Merrimack took both Harvard and Dartmouth to the wire, I'd suggest that all Ivy fans shut up and concentrate on winning the game if they find their team playing Merrimack in the future.

It will be interesting to see who they fill their two remaining open dates with. The Patriot League, the CAA and the NEC are all filled. Looks like it will be Pioneer League or Meac opponents for Harvard.

I feel Yale and the Ivy League can always do better. It is what it is. It can always be better. It all starts in the Athletic Department.? Stonehill is no Merrimack. 2022 I was coming up on 3 years ago., when they played Harvard. Although they played Air Force close in Colorado.Springs.
Yale and the Ivy League should be able to schedule up now that they are eligible for the playoffs. So yes get a more viable opponent. Start the season sooner. Let’s watch our teams compete.

I agree with Go Green - no opponent should be taken lightly. Stonehill is in the midst of a D2 to FCS transition, and is likely to improve far more than a typical struggling program as they continue to ramp up. Last year's Stonehill will quite possibly bear little resemblance to last year's version.

Having said that...

Born Power Index rated Stonehill 35 points below Yale last year. Some teams that ranked higher than Stonehill:
Slippery Rock (D2, 25 points better)
Springfield College (D3, 18 points better)
New Haven (D2, 14 points better)
RPI (D3, 5 points better)
Western Connecticut (D3, 2 points better)

No one is taking about an opponent lightly, I have no idea what you or GG is talking about. Especially, when Merrimack is brought up against Harvard 2 an half years ago. Yes Yale is lucky to have Stone Hill to round out its schedule. But if you’re going to schedule a school like Stone Hill. Why not schedule University of New Haven. Why try and get a better team.
I for one believe that is a fete that can be done. At least it’s not Valpo.!! Or Marist, Wagner.although Wagner is a good team. Vicky Chun needs to do A BETTER JOB. THAN WHAT SHE IS PRESENTLY IS DOING, NO..
I got spoiled by Tom Beckett’s vision for Yale Football Scheduling. She could at least have negotiated with Colgate in the time that she’s been head of this department.!! To secure a series with a better team. We have another 3 years with Holy Cross . I hope she’s not looking at herself in the mirror ,saying. Mirror, Mirror on the wall , who is the fairest of them all. Because she ain’t.!! Period.

Terms like "cupcake" and "Saint Margaret's School for the Blind" aren't words that Lou Holtz used to use when discussing an upcoming opponent.

I agree no one is taking an opponent lightly. Go Green is just creating a straw man, probably to draw attention to Dartmouth’s BIG WIN against Merrimack.
