Subject: Let's Invigorate This Board: What Does Megan Want?

Others have made mention of the "new" basketball board as well as the "old" basketball board it is slowly replacing.

The new board has a lot of energy. I love reading the posters calling each other names and belittling each other's expertise. It reminds me of this board back when Penn reigned supreme in football and men's basketball. The Quaker fans walked here with their chests out and their noses up. Those were the good ol' days.

If we don't enfuse this football board with some energy outside of football season, I fear that we too are headed for the way of the VCR and the eight-track player. Kids, ask your parents what those were.

Okay, I'll get us started. From a pure competition standpoint, I'm looking forward to the women's ILT more than the men's.

On the women's side, you have Princeton and Harvard in a much more interesting semi-final than you will find anywhere else this weekend in Providence.

If Princeton wins, the Tigers will have their third Quad 1 win of the season, all against Harvard. Princeton really needs this semi-final win if they want to continue their at-large hopes. If Harvard wins, it'll set up a final in which Columbia can get revenge for its sole conference loss of the season.

But if the final is a Columbia-Princeton rematch, watch out. My girlfriend Megan is a shooting star whose ceiling we can even begin to guess at now. But she has never beaten Princeton when all the lights are at their brightest.

I would love to ask Megan, "Are you hoping to face Princeton or Harvard in the final?"

Of course, 99% of coaches would say, "I'm just hoping to beat Penn on Friday night."

That's what 99% would say.

You know Megan is the 1%. She would tell you flat out either, "I want to play Harvard because those b------s at Princeton always get the best of me" or "I want to play Princeton because I want to get the Tigers monkey off my back."

That's why we love Megan.

Megan has a strong rooting interest in the other Friday semi, that much I guarantee you. She either WANTS to play Princeton or she wants to avoid it. Harvard is just the other team.

I won't even begin to pretend to know what Griffith wants in the ILT.

But if you forced me to guess, I'd say that she doesn't care. I think she wants to make the NCAA and advance a round, which means that whoever she plays in the ILT shouldn't be of consequence.

Happy to report that Dartmouth FINALLY got a player on the first-team All Ivy in MBB. It's been a while...

Did you ever pause to think Ms Griffith might not be amused to be referred to as "GF"? I do not know what her preference is for that or for opponent in the ILT, but I suspect, as with the other post's crack about "coaches in dresses", references to co-eds, it reveals a dated nomenclature, not to say Weltanschauung-tho' I just said it!

BTW: I got no problem with "the girls in their summer dresses" at all!

Regardless of what she wants, I think that Princeton would be a much tougher matchup for the Lions.

Harvard only has one great player and the rest (all due respect) are relatively mediocre.

Princeton has 4 outstanding starters: Chea, Becker, Tall, and the tall redhead (is it Parker-Hall or Hill?). The Nigerian girl ( i'm terrible with names) whose brother played for Columbia is also very good as are some other bench players. Columbia beat Princeton twice but they were close. in the first game Columbia was getting whooped at the half, and then nothing went well for Pton after intermission. The 2nd game was a heavyweight bout that broke the lions way late.

I just don't see Harvard as a great team and I dont think they will surprise the lions like they did in NY. More likely to be a Columbia rout like in Cambridge.

Although agree with your analysis about the relative strengths of a finals matchup with the Lions, am VERY concerned about that one great Harvard player who was able disrupt CU’s game at Levien. Megan will need a strategy to prevent a
repeat performance and to get Riley Weiss untracked.

If I were Coach Griffith watching last evening's P=H game, I would very much prefer to play Harvard.

In my humble opinion, it is much, much easier to defend against one transcendant player and four competent but not big-time supporting cast members. Facing a team with three or four legitimate threats (as with Columbia or Princeton) is a much tougher challenge.

I'm shocked that a coach very focused on defense such as Berube had no answers for Turner. No help defense, no early double-teaming, no box-and-one, no zone defense as a change of pace. Turner got everything she wanted, every trip down the court.

It's almost as if Princeton was surprised that Harvard had one really good player. "I'm shocked -- shocked! -- that the conference POY is excellent."

From a basketball coaching perspective, that was professional malpractice from Coach Berube. That game will haunt her the rest of her career.
