Subject: Sing the praises of players like Stefanini & Tapé, too!

Todd Golden's been at least as lucky as he's been good. In the spring of 2021, Kyle Smith left San Francisco and USF decided to turn over the head coaching position to Golden - at that point in time, he had no head coaching experience. However, Golden was smart enough to bring in two grad transfers from Columbia - guard, Gabe Stefanini and forward/center Patrick Tapé - to fill out his starting lineup for the 2021-22 season. Golden's USF team won 24 games; got an invite to March Madness; and lost in overtime to a strong Murray State team. One week after that tournament loss, University of Florida announced the hiring of Golden as that school's next men's basketball coach; and you know the rest. But Golden needed that one year at USF to ever be considered by Florida. And perhaps his trajectory would've lacked the sharpness and storybook aspect of it, if not for the roles Stefanini and Tapé played in his ascent.

Except Tape made a one year stop at Duke before USF, for the Dons he averaged about 20 minutes per game and about 5 points per game. Golden actually coached three years at USF compiling a 57-36 record, and earning a shot at Florida.

However, his final year in San Francisco was the only one that saw USF as tournament worthy - they never got into March Madness with Kyle and they never would have gotten that bid under Golden had he not brought in those two Columbia transfers for the 21-22 season. No invite to the tournament would have most probably meant no invite to Gainesville, either.
