While I may be wrong, I think there is little to preclude an Ivy school's alumni, in informal/unofficial conjunction with coaches, to organize to "buy" recruits/transfers with large amounts of money. If I am correct -- and I invite correction -- which school's alumni will first break the mold and do so? All of the Ivies are candidates, perhaps some more likely than others, but it would not surprise me if this occurs. Or is this prediction unlikely to come true?
About 1995 the DP reported that, three years or so into his tenure, Penn alumni put together a $500,000 annuity or some such financial benefit, for Bagnoli. Whether that is accurate I don't know, although I never saw it contradicted. After Carmody succeeded Carril and had great success, I understand, from a well-connected alum at the time, that he asked (demanded?) more compensation and Walters turned to an alum for some or all of it. Again, I don't know if this is accurate or the number supposedly involved, but this alum was probably the closest to the program in that era. Both of these matters involved coaches, not players/recruits. I mention them because there are alums at all of our schools who love supporting the athletic programs one way or another and some of them are wealthy. Back then, it was against the rules to pay college athletes. I think it is inevitable that we will see some big money from alumni in basketball, football at least. But I invite others to comment with their insights/thoughts.
