In reply to: ivy guy 's message, "Xaivian Lee has official visit to National Champion Gators" on 11:50:12 04/15/25 Tue

To paraphrase H Ross Perot

That giant sucking sound is the decline of IL basketball on a national level.

IL basketball is becoming the G league for the "for profit" NCAA teams

How many outstanding IL hoops players are going to play for their schools for 4 years?

While I may be wrong, I think there is little to preclude an Ivy school's alumni, in informal/unofficial conjunction with coaches, to organize to "buy" recruits/transfers with large amounts of money. If I am correct -- and I invite correction -- which school's alumni will first break the mold and do so? All of the Ivies are candidates, perhaps some more likely than others, but it would not surprise me if this occurs. Or is this prediction unlikely to come true?

About 1995 the DP reported that, three years or so into his tenure, Penn alumni put together a $500,000 annuity or some such financial benefit, for Bagnoli. Whether that is accurate I don't know, although I never saw it contradicted. After Carmody succeeded Carril and had great success, I understand, from a well-connected alum at the time, that he asked (demanded?) more compensation and Walters turned to an alum for some or all of it. Again, I don't know if this is accurate or the number supposedly involved, but this alum was probably the closest to the program in that era. Both of these matters involved coaches, not players/recruits. I mention them because there are alums at all of our schools who love supporting the athletic programs one way or another and some of them are wealthy. Back then, it was against the rules to pay college athletes. I think it is inevitable that we will see some big money from alumni in basketball, football at least. But I invite others to comment with their insights/thoughts.

This will NEVER happen under your dream-filled, suggested method. Look at the at-large bids in the men's NCAA Tournament and tell me what's available for the non-Power 4 schools who are legally paying the best players. When the Trustees of an institution rise up at a Board meeting and say, in unison, "This is outrageous, that Universities who prioritize athletics would actually legally pay money to student-athletes so their teams are better!" The folks at HYP have many more things on their agenda than worrying about players transferring to other schools. In fact, this won't even make the agenda at the spring Board meetings.

I don’t mean to suggest this will, if it happens, do more than slow the decline of Ivy sports in Division 1 sports where NIL is heavily used. It might slow down for a bit the decline of a couple of Ivy teams.

As far as Ghost’s comment, we will see how things develop. I will note that what I am talking about has nothing to do with University trustees or Presidents, as I think my post made clear.

No offense taken, I hear you loud and clear. But any kind of significant policy change will have to be cleared at the highest level, look how long it took to get the playoffs done. Now you're thinking of NIL $$? Yikes.

Gifting players money is legal

What the University thinks about it is irrelevant

Suppose Mr Lee is given 1 million $ by an anonymous booster (alumni/ae) or other interested party?
What could Princeton do?

Revoke his/her financial aid?

So what , kid has lots of money

Kick them out of school for doing something that is legal?

There are several attorneys on this Board and I would be interested in hearing their comments.

NIL is not illegal and the University cannot prevent people from outside the University for paying players not to leave.

Schools have nothing to do with NIL. I am surprised we have yet to see it. $2M per year for basketball, $3M for football should guarantee IL titles for first-mover.

Perhaps the fact that this advantage will be short-lived has kept it from happening. My guess is that half the league would swim in the NIL waters once the ice is broken (to mix my water-based metaphors).

With the understanding that the landscape keeps changing, and that rules are undoubtedly more honored in the breach than by observance, under current rules NIL technically cannot be used to pay someone simply to attend a school. The student is supposed to be providing an agreement to promote something in exchange for use of his/her name, etc. This limitation will almost surely change under the proposed House settlement, but it is still the current rule. Also, there are various state laws that may apply.

(You can laugh now).

"When a school appears to “commit millions” to a player through an NIL deal, the money is not directly coming from the school itself; instead, it’s typically paid by third-party businesses or collectives made up of boosters, alumni, and other supporters who can leverage the player’s NIL for marketing purposes, essentially acting as a conduit for the payment to the athlete, while still adhering to NCAA rules prohibiting direct school-to-player compensation.’
