Almost every state (not NJ) names its flagship public university with the state name, plaino. Well, the Univ of Pennsylvania is not the state school in Pennsylvania. Mid 70s in post grad time at Penn, it happened to me after replying to someone I was at Penn. “oh you guys had a great game yesterday,” referring to PSU. Got to the point where, if I remember correctly, Penn students has t-shirts reading “not Penn State.” The Univ undertook a branding campaign, I believe. It’s football programs instructed the game day commentators to refer to them as the Univ of Pennsylvania the first time they opened their mouths snd to refer to the school as “Penn” thereafter. Penn State confusion reached its apex when Penn did its Final Four run in 1979. They haven't come close to doing that again since. If Penn ever makes a serious run in the NCAA tournament again, we will see if the general public differentiates between Penn and PSU. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
