But men of all ages are often called boys. It's typically a sign of informality or affection. When I go away with my friends, nobody blinks that we call it a boys' weekend. Similarly, it usually -- but not always -- reflects informality or affection to refer to young women as girls. Now, it is absolutely true that sometimes the term is used to imply disrespect or disdain, but not often. When in the context of sports, it's almost always the former: informality or affection. Those that seek to take offense easily may think that they are striking a blow for women's rights or equality in general. Maybe, but the cost is as suggested earlier in this thread. You're just pissing off a lot of people. And when people are pissed off enough, they eventually vote for somebody who is going to put an end to political correctness. And so they have. So now I ask those well intentioned guardians of the terms "girls" and "women," don't you see what you've done to this country? As GG said, you're doing more harm than good.
