You never know, but you are right. They are bigger and quicker, so some magic will be required. I hope we did not use it all up in Ithaca.

My wife and I went and Cornell was a great host. The games were all exciting.

Go Quakers !!!

Illinois with a very easy 35 pt margin win. Up 40 pts at one point. Did the Ivy league send the right team or was this an aberration of the ILT?

You send your third best team, they're not in a position to win vs a 3 seed. A product of the post season tournament. So, of the four schools who participated, who had a great experience? Only 1 and off they went to a disappointing finish.

We will see what Princeton does against Okie State.

But if you are going to argue that the tournament served the men poorly, fairness dictates that it served the women well. Clearly, Columbia and Harvard looked strong after going through conference tournament play…

Of course, if you think the women are irrelevant, the say so.

Hardly. This is an apples and oranges discussion, please don't tell me the depth of high quality basketball is the same for men and women in Division 1.

I was told that foreign students aren’t eligible for NIL payments. Don’t know if that’s true.
In any event, Yale should have played Illinois. Yale was the best Ivy men’s team . The Penn game was an aberration. Tie score at the end of regulation despite 40 points from Power.

The assertion that Yale should have gone to the NCAA is based on moral philosophical grounds- right? You guys don’t actually think Yale would have done any better- right?

They got smoked by Alabama in the regular season. Bama was a four seed.

They lost to UNCW at home on Monday when the season was on the line.

Yay for them for winning the regular season title. But nobody was going to confuse them with 1979 Penn, 1998 Princeton or 2010 Cornell.

While not sending our best regular season team may have been a factor, the bigger factor why Penn got crushed is how the Power 5 basketball conferences are buying up talent to the point where the gap is significantly widening between the top 20 ranked teams and the mid-majors.

As noted often on this Ivy sports blog, the roster construction for the Power teams has dramatically changed during the NIL era. The average cost of a college basketball team roster is $9.7 million in the SEC, $8.6 million in the Big 12, $8.5 million in the Big Ten, $8.2 million in ACC and $8.0 million in the Big East. In contrast, the Mid to High Majors spend $2.3 million and the Low to Mid-Major only $525,000. For high-major men’s basketball programs, freshmen and senior stars are considered the biggest earners, making 4-7 times more than sophomores. Rotational players also earn roughly 15-25% less than starters while bench players make 30-55% less. It is ironic the Indiana University spent $32.0 million on its basketball roster to lead the nation in spending, but did not make the March Madness Dance.

Like it is for the Ivies in football, the GAP between us and the Power teams is only getting wider. At least our average Ivy student athlete will on average earn far more in their lifetime earnings compared to the average in lifetime earnings for student athletes in these Power conferences. We seem to be more likely to own a professional sports team versus trying to make the roster of the professional team.

Apparently the Penn student cheering section started chanting “That’s all right, that’s ok! You’re going to work for us someday!” In the closing minutes of the Illinois game.

The Illinois faithful thought it was classless and is telling the rest of the world about it in social media. The rest of the world agrees with Illinois.

I’m well aware that such cheers and cheers like it go back generations. But we got to knock that s—t off. There are reasons why people are pleased to see the current administration inflict pain on the Ivy League. This is one of them.

I agree with Go Green on this. These chants go back a long time and the Ivies are not the only student sections who have ever shouted them. But 2026 is exactly the wrong time to say them. When people already dislike or resent you, don’t give them a reason to hate you.

Leave it to the clowns at Penn to be unable to read the room.

I think any student section at any of the Ivies
could be capable of this chant

Arrogant/ classless

And you wonder why a lot of Americans dislike the IL?

The Stanford student section, during the Big Game vs Cal, used to take out their car keys and shake them at the state school kids, “we’re rich and you’re not.” Obnoxious!

This discussion has regrettably brought back to mind a sweatshirt actually seen at a basketball game decades ago:

Penn. An Ivy League School.

Penn had to deal with, decades ago, confusion with Penn State. Almost every state (not NJ) names its flagship public university with the state name, plaino. Well, the Univ of Pennsylvania is not the state school in Pennsylvania. Mid 70s in post grad time at Penn, it happened to me after replying to someone I was at Penn. “oh you guys had a great game yesterday,” referring to PSU. Got to the point where, if I remember correctly, Penn students has t-shirts reading “not Penn State.” The Univ undertook a branding campaign, I believe. It’s football programs instructed the game day commentators to refer to them as the Univ of Pennsylvania the first time they opened their mouths snd to refer to the school as “Penn” thereafter. It worked as far as I can tell, when was the last time you heard Penn mixed up with PSU?

Penn v. Penn State confusion reached its apex when Penn did its Final Four run in 1979. They haven't come close to doing that again since.

If Penn ever makes a serious run in the NCAA tournament again, we will see if the general public differentiates between Penn and PSU.

Penn ain't making a run in the tournament ever again. At least not until the Ivy commits to playing the D1 game.

This year's sweet 16:

6 B1G
4 SEC
3 XII
2 Big East
1 ACC

No more room at the inn for anyone else.

This will blow over soon enough, but I hope the genius Penn student who started the chant finds out that his (I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume it was a "he") initiative to vent his frustration over losing a basketball game was tweeted out by Yahoo Sports to 1.9 million views. That's 1.9 million people who just got the message Penn students are a--holes.

This Penn genius has caused a small and brief -- but real -- public relations problem for Penn and Penn alumni.

An Ivy League student should be smart enough to realize that a lot of people don't like Ivy Leaguers. A guy who transferred into the Ivy League once liked to talk about it, but now realizes that there is political advantage to attacking these institutions and especially their faculty and alumni.

Penn geniuses.

We Ivy sports fans like it when our alma mater makes the NCAA tournament because, for once, we have a national audience. It's a shame when the national audience takes away a negative impression. Penn fans, you would be wise to learn the appropriate lesson here.

Exactly.

I always associated this kind of thing with high schools, where immaturity is no more welcome, but unfortunately more common. Maybe this person was channeling his high school self. Let's hope he's at least smart enough not to claim it as a badge of honor.

While the Penn band's chant was truly in bad taste, I do get chuckles out of our Ivy student sections needling each other during Rivalry games.

The best example of Ivy students being clever was in 2004, when Yale students disguised as the Harvard Pep Squad tricked roughly 1,800 Harvard fans into holding up placards that spelled "WE SUCK" instead of "Go Harvard" during the annual Harvard-Yale football game.

Not to be outdone, the Harvard student section provided a wide array of witty signs when ESPN College GameDay visited Harvard during its rivalry game with Yale in 2014. The fans positioned their signs mocking Yale for TV cameras. Here are some of the funniest signs seen on ESPN included: Yale cites Wikipedia, Yale Kids Wear Crocs, This is my Yale Diploma, and My first sign was too erudite.

After all the friendly banter makes Rivalry Games even more fun.

Interesting article on Illinois team, which I have not followed, on p. A16 of Wall Street Journal. Over half its scoring and nearly 3/5 of its rebounding are from the so-called Balkan Five. Sheds some light on an apparently growing trend of European and other foreign players in the college game.
