In reply to: The Mountain Lion 's message, "Good Luck to the Columbia Women's Basketball Team!" on 12:15:58 04/01/26 Wed

The WBIT is the equivalent of the men's NIT. The WNIT is not affiliated with the NCAA (the WBIT is) and uses a "pay-for-play" model (the WBIT is funded by the NCAA).

So this is right up there with Princeton's 1975 NIT title.

The 1975 NCAA tournament had 32 teams. The 2026 NCAA tournament has 64 (68 if you include the play-in games). Thus one might say the 1975 NIT was essentially equivalent to the lower half of the 2026 NCAA field.

None of this should be taken as diminishing Columbia's win especially in this NIL era. They look to be formidable in the IL next season.

The WBIT had 32 teams. The 1975 NIT had only 16.

Columbia had to play an extra game to win its title.

Good research, gentlemen. Of course, you're both right.

The 1975 NIT field would be equivalent to the bottom half of the current 64-team NCAA field, so a meaningfully more competitive set of opponents than the WBIT today.

But every time you step on the court, something can go wrong. Think of how different this season would be if Columbia had not dropped its first game to Cornell.

At the end of the season, Columbia was playing its best basketball of the year and steamrolling capable competition. This was a tour de force performance.

comments on this thread have served a purpose. and columbia fans ought to begin to recognize gg as one who's there to make fair assessments - not to say he's perfect; but when anybody offers you fairness in this lifetime, see it as something to feel a sense of gratitude for.

Whilst continuing to reflect in the glory of Lions WBB - and acknowledge GG's fair and open-mindedness - I think it's fair to say, no one in this tournament was truly prepared for what hit them.

Yes, they saw the scouting reports, read the film, and prepared what they thought to be appropriate stratagems to deal with the Lions. The Lions suffocating, relentless defense and up-tempo offense put all these games away well before the opponents could mount a comeback.

And yes, the Cougars of Brigham Young came closest to achieving an upset when they played true to their come from behind form in the final quarter and went on a terrific tear, stealing the ball and going in for lay-ups, then immediately repeating same.

But as with all the Lion opponents, too little, too late. The Lions got control of the game and proceeded to sink more baskets, on their own and aided by the Cougars last ditch fouling.

It was interesting to hear the commentators on the broadcast say sometime in the 3rd Q that the Lions were clearly better conditioned than BYU, that Cougars couldn't match the pace and were visibly struggling. This point somewhat belied by the aforementioned 4th Q tear by BYU, when Columbia seemed to lose just that much focus and weren't anticipating the onslaught.

The commentators also kept saying that BYU relied too much on "one on one" play, while CU played unselfish team ball.

The Columbia WBB team will be recognized and honored on the gym of Columbia's court.

And they will get a write-up in the Columbia Alumni Magazine.

That doesn't happen with the countless one-and-done NCAA teams. But hey -- they got their "once in a lifetime experience" (as some folks here deem it).
