Scuttlebutt has the top 2 candidates fir UVA head coach facing each other Monday. Many people assume this means Madalon, but assumimg the story is true, don't be surprised if it is Mitchell or Hirsch.

No truth to the rumor I could have made any of the saves, although I would dearly love to have been able to repel dook.

Northwestern alumnus and super fan Mike Wilbon was just interviewed during the NU-North Carolina NCAA women's championship game HOSTED by the Wildcats. Wilbon tried to explain away the odd situation where the title game is not at a neutral site, but rather on the campus of one of the participants.

Wilbon: "Teams don't win when they host. The last one was Kelly [Maryland in 1986]."

That infuriates me. The only thing worse than siting the tournament on the home field of a participant is when the home fans deny that it's an advantage. It reminds me of Penn fans trying to make the case that siting the Ivy basketball tournament at The Palestra is a good idea because the latter is the best arena in the League.

It's an advantage. It's not appropriate for a championship game unless it's awarded on the basis of a regular season title.

I don't want to sound like an apologist for North Carolina, today's losing team. If anything, it's easy to root against the Tar Heels because of their prominent and historic role polluting college sports with make-believe courses and generally making a mockery of "student"-athletes.

But the officiating in today's game favored Northwestern. That's always a matter of opinion of course, but a more statistical argument is that Northwestern is now 40-0 in NCAA tournament games played at home.

I can see why the NCAA chose Northwestern to host, presumably to grow the sport out of its roots in the Northeast. Okay. But at least let's not have Mike Wilbon complaining about how hard it is to win when you host.

It's not harder to win as host.
