Last time they played in SanDiego was 2023, last Saturday was in Princeton. Up until Vicky Chunn, came along. Her focus seems to be on women’s sports. Yale was in the forefront of interesting OOC games. CalPoly, Big Sky in California a Yale win. Army at the Yale Bowl an Overtime Yale win. Richmond CAA in Richmond a Yale win. UConn a Yale lost . But if Reno put in Nolan Grooms in earlier. I believe Yale would have won that game.
All these games were put together by Tom Beckett, who Vicky Chunn could hold a candle too. I don’t expect her to do the job of Mr. Beckett. I miss that era.
I and others would welcome a more challenging schedule. It would be , great for the Team, the fans , The Community and The Ivy League.
Whenever an Ivy League team plays an OOC opponent. I want to see them do well. Cheers to all

You miss the Tom Beckett era? Yale went 7-17 against Harvard during Tom's tenure; you must be a Harvard fan. Across all sports, Yale averaged about three Ivy championships per year, among the worst in the League. There were good things he accomplished as well in terms of improving the facilities and raising the athletics endowment, but it was hardly a golden age for Yale.

Talking about OOC, Tom Beckett, got the ball rolling for this team. Chun walked into a turn key operation.

Tom: I didn’t realize that was you! Hope your retirement is going well. I’d have traded a few wins in The Game for your accomplishments in OOC play but maybe that’s just me. Yale football was on the upswing when you left with wins against Harvard in your last two years (after losing 14 out of 15 in the preceding years), so thanks for that. I’m not a big fan of Vikki but not sure why some get so worked up about her. It’s obviously not about Ws and Ls because they haven’t been as bad as during your tenure.

Football attendance has nose-dived under Chun.
Yale won National Championships in Men’s Hockey and Men’s Lacrosse under Beckett.
Yale Baseball went to NCAA regionals and won two games under Beckett.
Reno was a Beckett hire.

James Jones was also a Beckett hire and under Beckett Yale went to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament for the first time in 54 years. Chun has just ridden Beckett’s coattails in football and men’s basketball while men’s hockey has imploded under her tenure.

REPORTED football attendance has nosedived under Chun.

Some of the football attendance numbers put out by Beckett were not believable. Chun was only guilty of being honest.

I go to the games and I have eyes. Trust me, attendance is precipitously down.

I'll back up SoE's "eye test" on this.
Did Beckett pad the announced attendance figures? For sure.
Is that the only explanation for Yale's drop in announced attendance? It probably does not even account for half of the drop.

... Chun was not successful in reversing--or even stopping--a trend that began roughly in the mid 1970s?

I'll agree, and clarify:

Chun has accelerated a trend that began roughly in the mid 1970s.

I’ve been going to these games since 1967, the numbers weren’t inflated, Yale had a great following. People would come from all parts of Connecticut and New York. Yale had an easy inviting aura . If you wanted to go tailgate, you got a rubber stamp. To come back in. You could bring in your own food subs, pizza, binoculars. Now if you leave no entry. I hear it all the time, this isn’t fun to watch a game because of the restrictions. That Chun has implemented. Yale is lucky if they have 2,000 to 5,000 on good day . Instead of the 7,000 to 12,000 per Beckett’s era. That is FACT.!!

I’m responsible for this conversation veering off into a Beckett v Chun conversation (among Yalies, presumably). While I bristle at the notion of looking back to some golden age under Beckett (although things picked up at the tail end of his tenure), I’m not carrying water for Chun either. I’ve attended Yale football games back to the pre-Cozza era and it is 100% correct that football attendance has dropped steadily for 50+ years. Part of that is outside of the control of any administrator, but Yale does virtually nothing in terms of promotion to sell tickets and then it makes the experience at the Bowl unpleasant. Others have mentioned the ridiculous policy of blocking reentry if you return to your car. They also prevent any food or drinks from being brought in although they post signs saying otherwise. And Yale completely mismanages parking for the only time there is a big crowd, for Harvard biannually. I bought tickets from Harvard last year for The Game in Boston and have gotten on the Crimson promotion distribution list ever since. They appear to be doing quite a good job; I’ll be interested to see if Harvard attendance picks up as a result. I wish Yale would try to learn some lessons from the “Team from the North.”
