Simply put, it was a slaughter. At no time did Brown even look like a team that belonged on the same field as Harvard. And as a long-suffering fan, it was an embarrassment. It was also an indictment on James Perry. Yes, Harvard is the ivy league favorite, and they have enough talent to fill two ivy league championship teams, but Brown's feeble efforts were truly unacceptable. At no time did the Brown D, which did so well last week, pressure the Harvard QB. I am not even sure the Harvad QB could tell you what color Brown's uniforms were. And, of course, the other side of the ball was just the opposite. Brown had no time to pass or find holes to run through. My question is, Perry has been around long enough to recruit better players, so why hasn't he? Football at every level is determined by how much pressure is put on the opposing QB. If there is no pressure, as there was yesterday, the game can only end one way, i.e. 41-7, and it could have been worse. It was a warm September evening, and the ice under Perry is melting very fast.

Yes, Brown early on this season is painfully inconsistent. Is James Perry another David Archer but with more charm? Will he (like Archer) plateau at five wins? I'll defer to the second half.....of the season.

No arguments here as far as your game analysis is concerned, Grin. A truly disappointing performance, especially to go out and spot the Crimson a two-score lead from the get go.

I'm not convinced that Perry's seat is getting hot just yet. That's not because I think he's performed well - if you look at his first 5 years compared to Estes' last 5 years, Perry has a slightly worse record, so we're a long way away from turning the program around. I don't think you let a guy basically retool his entire staff if you're planning to fire him in the near future. I imagine he'll get a year or two with the new indoor facility, which seems to be helping him with this year's class, based on Brown's recruiting page on 24/7 Sports.

I'd like to think the true level of this team is somewhere between what we saw against Georgetown and what we saw yesterday night. Time will tell.

I agree that it was an awful loss, Grin. Brown has the added problem of another recruiting challenge given that it requires SATs/ACTs while a few other Ivies do not. The league presidents need to find a way to fix that inequity.

The Brown QB, James Murphy, did not handle the pressure well. He threw three interceptions and overthrew a few others. Had he played better, it would not have made a difference, but it is important to note. In fairness to Murphy this was just his third or fourth game. He needs to learn how to throw it away when there is nothing open or just run with it.

In the early part of this century Harvard stymied all other teams by recruiting at a level above the rest of the league. Essentially they were a middle of the road D1 team playing true D2 teams. Note, I do not try to mix words by calling the subdivision D1. Whether they like to admit it or not, they are D2. With this arrangement, H dominated the league for many years, and the Yale alumni were not happy. They tried a number of coaches until they wised up and hired Tony Reno, the H recruiter. And while it took Reno a little while to get his traction, Yale is now firmly competitive with H. Point, if you want to beat Harvard, you are going to have to recruit to their level. Otherwise, accept getting beat 41-7.

You can do what Dartmouth has done.

Look for international players. Look for guys who probably would be better suited to play another position at the next level. Recruit unheralded guys and develop the hell out of them.

It's not easy. But it can be done.

Go Green is being nice. There is some first class whining here. Wow.

Whining involves self-pity. I can assure you there is none. But there is plenty of frustration and angst. I am getting older, and Brown hasn't been a factor in 15 years. It would be nice to see them competitive before I check out. Sometimes it helps to vent, that's all.

For the sake of perspective, it is useful to remember that, on this board, twenty years ago, some stated that football in our league was locked in an unbreakable triumvirate composed of Brown, Harvard and Penn. B because of “flexible” curriculum, H because “Harvard is Harvard,” and Penn because of “Wharton.”

Experience teaches that determination and hard work can reshuffle the Ivy deck!
