I take issue with your assertion that Europeans are overwhelmingly Christian. I lived in Europe for 14 months, I assure you that my experience as well as every poll I have read in the last 15 years leads me to the conclusion that they are not. Atheism ranges between 33-50%. I lived in Italy, the home of both the Roman Catholic Church and the worlds lowest birthrate. That should tell you something.

We are NOW an overwhelmingly Christian nation, but at the time of our founding only 5% of the people attended church regularly. The religiosity of America did not begin in earnest until the First Great Awakening about 1802.

It is important to note that abo 1/3 of the Founding Fathers were either atheist, deist, agnostic, or skeptical.

Happy Holidays!
