Subject: new sailor

Hello all, I am so glad to find this group. Last year I got into sailing and bought a Sirocco 15, sort of a dinghy with a tiny cabin. I can and have slept in it, but it is better suited to carry camping gear, which is how I use her. Sirocco is a sloop rig, with steel centerboard. I sail in the mountain lakes here in Utah, where the wind never blows from the same direction for more than 20 minutes. Right from the start people told me I needed a motor, and all the websites and books I had seen showed even tiny sailboats with motors. I got a 3 HP gas hog that I quickly hated. it stank, was noisy, leaked all over, and I hated that oil slick that always seemed to follow me. It has sat in the garage after that first time used. I love to just sail. I use oars to get out of a marina, and love to sail out of and into the docks where I launch. I bought the boat with idea of using her to explore all the wild places I can find. My big adventure so far was 8 days sailing and camping the backcountry of yellowstone Lake. That was a wild time. We moved camp 6 times, moving from bay to bay. My next big goal will be the inside coast of baja. and of course, Puget sound. I even have a map of the whole Sound on the wall of my house. Such a magical place for a desert rat like me.
I really love the comments and philosphies of Jerome F and all the rest of you. I have read 2 of his books. dead on my man. Some day soon I plan to live near big water and be a water rat. I know, I know, listen, to the son of an undertaker, just do it. I am 50 and have no excuse not to. no wife and my kids are raised. Dont temp me or I might just be up there sooner that I ever thought.

anyway, I love listening and learning from you all, maybe meet you all real soon
kyle
