the method Jay descibes in his books works like a charm. Drop anchor where you want and play out rode 2x what you expect the final to be. Drop a kedge off the stern, and reel in the bow rode, playing out stern rode, til you are in the middle of the 2. Cleat the bow rode, and use a winch on the stern rode to crank it in bar tight and have a beer while you watch if it stays tight or not. This sets ands tests the anchor better than ony motor could ever hope to. If the line goes slack, you are dragging and try again.
