Of course it's been done, boats without engine have been just about everywhere!

But seriously, It's not too big a deal. For sure the straights up there boast both fluky and violent winds, not to mention strong currents, but among the islands are plenty of protective spots to tuck into.

I've taken my sailboat up as far as Denman, from Olympia, and others have cruised just as far and further; it's not a question of if it's possible (it wasn't even a big deal really), you just have to have a boat and the crew to do it. Obviously the exposed side of the island is much more frightening, and I can't give you personal advice there.

A lot of people make a big deal about sailing engineless, which kinda makes sense given how few people do it, but in the end it's just 'normal'. You're out there, sailing and rowing sometimes, and you just don't really see what all the fuss is about, it's not some great human feat or a show of true will, we are not myths- we are just sailors.

The secret is to really begin.
