Nikita flipped the book over in her hand and then flipped it back. She rubbed the cover and blinked as she looked off towards the wall. She rolled her head back and sighed.

Michael opened the door to the room and looked at Nikita. “I thought you said you didn’t want to read any of them until we got home.”

Putting the journal to the side, Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “I didn’t pick one that was from when we were there… it was before us… I thought it would help to get reference.”

“I think it would be best not to read them at all,” Michael declared as he picked up the journal and placed it back into the box. “I don’t see why we should.”

“She did one thing… but what I did read showed that she didn’t always believe it,” Nikita pointed out and Michael sat on the edge of the bed. “You should have spent the time to call home.”

“I did,” Nikita groaned. “Sabina was upset that Adam and Walter have been working on a secret project. Adam was upset that Walter wasn’t trying to take the dating profile serious. Walter was upset that Adam started a profile for something that he didn’t want to do. Reagan and Mick are almost sure that Walter is having more fun with the profile than he is letting on. Sabina got on again to complain that we left without her….”

Michael watched Nikita stop before he was about to raise his hand. She rolled her eyes to the side and groaned. “We should have gone home.”

“You were tired.”

Nikita sighed and shrugged her shoulders. “Not now.”

Michael looked at the books and went to them. He could tell that while Nikita had been ready to go to sleep before they had dinner, she was wide awake now. But he didn’t think it was because she had food or because they were alone in a hotel room without the children. It was because of these journals.

He looked for a while and picked one up. “We don’t start at the beginning. We start here.”

“Where?”

Michael sat on the bed beside Nikita and held the book. “Here.”

Nikita looked at the cover and looked at Michael. She jerked and Michael pulled her closer. “We’ll read it together. Promise me that, for all of these, Kita.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down.

The manipulation of data was almost too easy to support the decision to bring Nikita back before the so-called complete transformation of her personality. The fact that Paul accepted that the conversion would be completely permanent was almost laughable if he didn’t believe in the process so fully. It showed how gullible he was and I’ll be able to continue to use that to my benefit to suit the needs that need to be met.

The possibility was that Michael would not react upon Nikita’s return, but I suspected correctly. I would have had to take more advert actions if he had not started to interrupt the programming that was in Nikita’s head, although I had serious reservations that it would ever hold long term with Nikita being exposed back to those she had known previously. Even with Paul’s prodding, I wouldn’t have been able to keep Walter and Birkoff away from Nikita for long at all. But as planned, Michael did what I suspected he would do and resolved the situation for me.

It all returns to the fact that Paul has this belief that we are going to run Section for ever. He has no succession plan in place and believes that the person who is to come after him should be his clone. That will not work in a world that is always changing. The next person will not be like Paul. They shouldn’t be like Paul.

Michael and Nikita are the future of Section One. To entirely try to void humanity from either one of them is a tremendous error that I will not allow to occur. Not that I want to embrace a full blown romantic relationship, if that allows them to hold onto humanity, it is a necessary evil.

Paul will never know how nervous all of these actions in the past few months have caused me. The fear that messing with the essence of Nikita would make her into something that neither one of us wanted. I was playing with the same science that had almost made her pull the trigger on the Chinese Prime Minister when she was certain that she saw one of her abusers. Knowing that Michael had stopped that made it easier for me to go forward with an air of confidence that I projected to Paul to protect us all.

Section One isn’t going to be here forever. I doubt that I will make it that long. I can only hope that others do last, that Michael and Nikita last. They will tend to the flock in the way that it should be handled. To be something better in the world for the powers to be to see and not something to fear. I have no doubt that the powers are waiting for Paul to try to turn against them. That will be his downfall.
