“Did you see the gift that Sabina made me?” Nikita spoke as she walked over to Nat and Rhoda as she held the handmade frame in her hand. “She put all of these beads in it… and got pictures of our family.”
Nat took the frame and smiled. “It’s beautiful.”
“It was for me…. And not for the baby… it followed the rules,” Nikita explained as she rubbed at her back and tilted her head to the side. It had been a worry that everyone would bring gifts for the baby but she wanted this Christmas to be special for Sabina and Adam, before the baby arrived. That wish was followed but now Nikita was acutely aware of the things that she didn’t have ready for the baby.
Nikita swallowed back a groan as the baby kicked her hard. Nikita closed her eyes and swallowed once more as she opened them and was glad to see that Nat and Rhoda were gushing over the frame. She did love it and she knew how important it was to Sabina that she loved it. It was one of the reasons why Nikita made sure that everyone, even those who only now came over for dessert, had to see it.
“How did Michael like his gift?” Rhoda inquired as she handed the frame back to Nikita. Turning to put the frame back up on the mantel, Nikita smiled. “He liked the motorcycle… and liked it better that it didn’t work.”
Nikita thought for a second and laughed. “Adam was already looking up for parts, but Michael said he wasn’t going to let Adam take the easy way out of it. It’s going to be years before that bike turns over.”
Rhoda liked Nikita’s idea but wasn’t sure if Michael would catch on. But it was clear that he saw that Nikita gave him a project that he could work with Adam on to restore the bike. Rhoda had to bribe Nat to help her go get the bike for Nikita and the seller was stunned that someone wanted such a rundown bike. He practically gave them the bike for free. “And the extra guest?”
Nikita chuckled. “Orana helped Walter cook. She feels like part of the family and seems so well matched with Walter.” This time, Nikita was caught off guard with the thump from inside and she gasped loudly. She placed her hands over her stomach as she lurched forward slightly, caught entirely unready to hide the baby’s bad behavior. “Wow… must be upset… not being the center of attention.”
“Both of you have had a long day,” Rhoda placed a strong arm under Nikita’s elbow. “It’s going to be a while before dessert is served… maybe you should go sit down and take a rest.”
Nikita exhaled and nodded her head. “I have been up… and I didn’t… well… there wasn’t a lot of sleep…”
Rhoda pushed Nikita’s hair back and smiled at her. “No need to explain… I’ll come get you when Walter starts to get the plates out.”
“I need that apple pie upside down cheesecake,” Nikita firmly said and Rhoda laughed. “No one will stop you from having that.”
From the corner, Keane observed Rhoda walking with Nikita and he took a sip of his coffee. He glanced at his watch and pushed away from the corner. He walked into the kitchen and into Walter and Orana kissing at the sink. He cleared his throat and showed that his cup was empty. “I was wondering if there was more coffee.”
“Oh…” Orana blushed as she pushed away from Walter. “I was coming out here to start another pot. Did you like the Hazelnut?”
“Yes,” Keane nodded his head. Walter sighed and looked at Keane. “I was telling Orana about the plans for the baby shower tomorrow. My sugar has no idea, does she?”
“No,” Keane shook his head and he placed the cup down on the counter. “I’ll be back for the coffee.”
“Keane?” Walter asked as he stepped forward. “Something wrong?”
“Nikita just needs some rest… maybe we were wrong planning for this the day after Christmas.”
“Well, she didn’t have us much time to think things out, did she?” Walter chuckled and he looked at the doctor. “She is ok, right?”
“I think she just needs some rest. We shouldn’t linger around too late tonight,” Keane spoke as he eased out of the kitchen and into the den where Michael and Adam were playing some sort of video game. He waited until Adam jumped up with his hands in the air. “Take that, old man!”
Michael turned to look at his son. “I won the first five times.”
“Ah… what’s a little competition between father and son?” Jason laughed as he leaned back on the couch. “Glad you like the game… not sure I’ll ever get it out beyond us… but it’s meant for you two.”
Michael was going to say something but he stopped when he saw Keane. It was like Michael sensed that it was time to step away from the thing that Nikita wanted to happen today – Michael got to spend a lot of time with his children. He handed the controller over to Jason and pushed him towards the television. “Time for you to beat the boy.”
Michael walked into the hallway and Keane shook his head. It was the way that Michael hung his head down that made Keane know more than he wanted to know, but it was something that he did need to know. “Look, Keane… Nikita… and I…”
“So you celebrated Christmas last night… that’s all I want to know about it…” Keane shook his head from side to side. “Obviously she didn’t sleep as much…”
“She hasn’t been sleeping much of late. The baby kicks all the time,” Michael shrugged his shoulders slightly. “She didn’t want to bother you with this today.”
“And the sharper kicks?” Keane asked and Michael jerked. “She had one this morning when we were sitting down to open gifts.”
“And one during dinner… and one just a few moments ago,” Keane pointed out as he looked directly at Michael. “She didn’t want people to see them.”
“She couldn’t hide the one this morning… she spilled orange juice,” Michael swallowed and turned his head slightly. “So... I caused these… are these contractions?”
“First, I don’t know,” Keane spoke as he looked at Michael. “I think I know what they are… and they aren’t very close together, but Nikita is Nikita.”
“She may not even know… you know…” Michael worried and Keane sighed. “One step at a time… and I want to go see her, but I know that you have to be there… because she is going to freak out.”’
