part 2
Master Chang and I studied the lineage of Master Chen Pan Ling, which lead us to study the lineage of the Wu,Yang and Chen styles.
From what we found Yang Lu-Chan studied under Chen Chang-Hsing learning the medium frame (old style). Over the years he changed some of the form by removing some of the moves that gave his older students trouble like stomping the feet, jumps and expelling of power which the Chen style is known for.
Because of his fighting skills Yang Lu-Chan was asked to teach the royal court. Yang Lu-Yu did not want to teach the Munchu princes and guards something that was handed down to family members so he taught bigger movements then what he had learned. Yang Lu-Chan and his son Yang Pan-Hou taught big movements together, one of their students was Wu Chuan-Yu. Yang Lu-Chan decided to teach Wu Chuan-yu the smaller circle style which was the medium frame (old style)in secret. His son Yang Pan-Hou got mad and from then taught medium frame (old style) to all his students which is now known as medium frame. Wu Chuan-Yu studied with them till Yang Lu-Chan retired. Yang Lu-Chan's thrid son Yang Chien Hou made very slight changes and taught what is now known as medium frame(old style).
Wu Chuan-Yu taught his son Wu Chien-Chuan the medium frame(old style). One of Wu Chien-Chuan's students was Chen Pan Ling who studied the medium frame( old style). As the years went on Wu Chien-Chuan added the leaning of the body, changed some of the hand pattern slightly and the circles became smaller which became small frame but did not change the pattern of the form hardly at all, to what is now known as the Wu style today.
Three of Yang Chien-Hou's students were Hsu Yu-Sheng, Yang Shao-Hou(his son) and Chi Te (aka Chi Tzu-Hsiu). All three were teachers of Chen Pan Ling teaching him medium frame. It was Yang Chien-Hou' third son Yang Cheng-Fu who changed the medium frame movements even bigger, changed the hand patterns and changing the pattern of the form completly making it the large frame which is now known as the Yang style.
If you look at Yang Lu-Chan who learn the medium frame from Chen Chang-Hsing, did away with the stomping, jumps and expelling of power we have a smoother, flowing ,even tempo form like I do.
If we look at Wu Chien-Chuan's Wu style, Chen Pan Ling does not have any of the leaning, hand patterns are very slightly different, the pattern of the form is just about the same. Master Chang and I took the Wu style book of Wu Chien-Chuan and compared it to Chen Pan Ling's book, they are almost exactly the same pattern.
Looking at Yang Chien-Fu's Yang style the pattern of the form is completely different, the hands are different patterns and the movements are bigger than Chen Pan Ling's.
We also looked at the times that these changes came about.
Yang Lu-Chan took away the stomps, jumps and expelling of power before he taught Wu Chuan-Yu. If our charts are right Wu Chien-Chuan added the leaning and smaller movements after he taught Chen Pan Ling. And we can see that Chen Pan Ling studied under Yang Shao-Hou not his brother Yang Cheng-Fu who completly changed the form and devopled the Yang style of today.
Looking at what we found to the best of my knowledge, I can say we do Chen style without the stomping, jumps or expelling of power. Or I can say I do the Old Yang style which Yang Lu-Chan devopled after he did away with the Chen's flavor of stomping, jumping or expelling of power making the style smoother, flowing, even tempo.
The chose is yours. If anyone has more information on the lineage please pass it on.
