Subject: late lunch in denmark

Late Lunch in Denmark.

The Danish queen, on the fifty-krona note,
Shrugged her shoulders and apologetically
Smiled when the liveried waiter told me that
It wasn't enough to buy a bottle of beer.

I pinched the queen's cheek till she blushed
And reluctantly handed my note to the
Waiter, who murmured that its value was
Just enough for me to buy a cup of coffee.

When he, on creaking shoes, trotted off to
Fetch me the stewed brew I walked around
And drank left over wine from tables soiled
By brown gravy and overflowing ashtrays.
