Like so many others who have left messages on this page I was thrilled to find this website. I worked at the Golden Horseshoe from 1965 to 1967. I was the singing bartender (I believe the only singing bartender the Horseshoe ever had) I was part of the pre-show and sang "Danny Boy" & "Rock-a-by Your Baby" and alternated shows with the singing waitresses. I started at 19 and turned 21 while there. I also sang on the Monday night Hootenanny shows. It was one of the happiest times of my life and to this day some of my closest friends are from those years.
I was saddened to read that Delores Bice had passed away, she was one of the waitresses I worked with. There is a picture that is posted on this site of Delores with two other waitresses which were unknown. I can tell you the girl in the middle was Jody Donovan. A few years later she also subbed for Betty Taylor. Jody remained one of my closest friends until she passed away in 1995 and had a wonderful singing career which took her all over the world. Other friends of mine who subbed for Slue-Foot Sue during that period along with Jody and Judy Wallace was Gerri Rose who went to Disneyworld to be Slue-Foot (she also sang with Bill Elliots band in Carnation Plaza) and Marita Valentine, one of the can can girls who also went to Disneyworld. Other singing waitresses I've remained friends with were Sandy Riddet Macintosh & Carol Keller who married a Jungle cruise guide. Also performing in the show those summers was Lee Fugal, who some will remember played the honky-tonk piano, banjo, drums, trombone and sometimes all simultaneously. They were truly wonderful years. The only fault we all had at work was we probably laughed too much. One last thing which shows me yet again what a very small world we live in. I came across a message left on this page from Gil Christner who is an old friend I've booked on many commercials. I had no idea he also worked as a bartender at the Horseshoe. I can't wait to tell him we both share some history which obviously means the world to both of us.

Have mixed feelings at visiting this site. As a former doorman and bartender at the Horseshoe, I was pleased to see the site. I had found the page after searching for Jody Donovan. I have just heard that Richard Dawson had died. I knew Jody used to live with him and I thought I'd look her up. Jody was a year or two older than I when I worked with her in 1964-65. I will always remember her as having a wonderful talent but also being the sweetest girl I have ever met. I used to hang out at the girls apartment and just loved her from afar. She was always so nice to me and I believe she liked me...not as much as I liked her! Many years later, my wife and I were on a cruise and I discovered she was singing. She was a delight to see and talk with, again. I don't know the cause of death but I miss her, now, from afar.

[> [> [> [> Remembering Jody -- JERRY COYLE (Sad), 18:31:45 09/28/12 Fri [1]

Jody Donovan & I worked Cruise ships together 33 years ago.
She was a beautiful woman with the proverbial smile that lit up the room.
She was a great talent, and, as mentioned in previous notes, the sweetest gal you could ever meet. She was loved afar by many. Over the last 33 years I always, happily, assumed that Jody was out there just being Jody. It was with great sadness to hear that she died.....leaving the world a less happy place.

I worked with Jody also on cruise ships! We remained good friends until her passing in 1995 after a very courageous battle with breast cancer. I miss her even now. She was an incredible woman with a huge heart!

[> Re: 1965, 1966, 1967 -- Judi Wallace Carlson, 12:48:01 04/02/13 Tue [1]

Stumbled onto this site for the first time - my heart pounds as I try to find words. From February, 1965 until December, 1998 I was blessed to sing as a waitress, as understudy to the late, great Betty Taylor as Slue Foot Sue, and as the lead, Lily Langtree, in the Jamboree at the Horseshoe, then as soloist w/several big bands and member of the Modernaires at Carnation Plaza and Small World stage. Just seeing the names of my precious life-long friends in print here is thrilling (Hi Mick!!). But, Jody? Oh, there will never be another Jody. We spent endless days and nights together throughout those years. When I married and had a family (I named my firstborn after her), we continued to stay very close, no matter where in the world her talent took her. 1993 she opened for us (the Modernaires) several weeks on the road. After almost 40 years, there we were together again ~ on stage ~ amazng! When cancer took her, my life became immeasurably poorer. We are all poorer without her. I'm blessed to have the opportunity to hear from others that loved her and each other.
