Do the pulling tractor diesels need to run such rich air/fuel ratios for power?

I had a modified 3406 CAT making 1400hp with without very much black smoke.
The Europe truck racing circuit was getting 15-1600hp from 12 liters without a lot of smoke.

Maybe the pullers are making more power than that?

not that a few tractor pulls are killing the environment,just wondering....
