Well, isn’t this just peachy! At the August City Council meeting, without discussion or explanation, the council passed resolution 149-2023 to transfer $12,000.00 to the legislative body for travel and conference so that they could attend the SOMOS 2023 conference in Puerto Rico. There was a SOMOS conference in Albany NY back in March of this year but they would much rather take a flight to PR rather than drive to Albany, after all, it’s not their money so who cares?
Last I checked there is nothing in our City Charter that requires that the taxpayers pay for any type of leadership programs, continuing education, or networking for city council members. They receive a stipend for their public service, that’s it. Why are we gifting $12,000.00 of taxpayer’s money to them so that they can party hardy on the taxpayer’s dime? Somewhere in the City of Newburgh there is some homeowner who is working 2 jobs to pay his $12,000.00 tax bill, while this city council treats our money like it’s their personal pocket change. While many of us are living paycheck to paycheck this is about as tone deaf as one could be to the struggles of the average Newburgh city resident.
