David M. Hoovler Orange County DA you have never been asked by me, or in any official way that I’m aware of, to cut down on press releases issued about crime that originates in the City of Newburgh. If so, prove it.
The reference is not only to that article, but other times where you have either publicly overstepped and/or not communicated with the local elected officials.
What I said in many conversations was, as you are an elected official please check in with the local elected officials to ensure we are all up to speed and sending a unified message. That has not happened. (FYI, if you ask any elected official from any party at any level, they will tell you that I said the same to them). I also said that the City of Newburgh reserves the right to say no without being scolded or told we are making a mistake when clearly our crime is reducing, and we are improving in many areas, plus increasing our force with higher pay. Also, our Police Chief and Commissioner are highly qualified, so if they explain why a program is not the best fit for us, then it is not the best fit. I support our police. Executive staff is not doing things outside of the police leadership and forcing them to comply.
You and I both know that no municipality sends out everything crime related.
Other places in Orange County are behind us in their reports to DCJS.
Press releases have slowed down because crime is down. And since November we have put the weekly crime report on our website.
We do publicize the good work that our police do. Anybody can look at their social media to see that.

Mid Hudson News nobody attacked a reporter. The repeated claim was that the city was hiding crime from the media to portray a false positive image when in fact, since November 2022, a weekly crime report is on the city webpage for all to see. I just never publicized it on social media. Further, it is a verifiable fact that almost all emails fom reporters are answered within 24 hours. Sometimes the answer is short becuase it’s under investigation.
Also, Hoovler is an elected official. The expectation is for collaboration, not overstepping, as he has no control over any of our departments or City Hall.
Also, if you noticed, the City of Newburgh press relesse included our Police Commissioner. To repeat, the police leadership are 100% with the policy, so there is no gag order, and they are also bothered by these baseless accusations. It actually undermines their leadership to claim they are hiding crime. They are highly qualified and trusted to make decisions for their department. Nobody forces a decision on them.
The State Attorney’s office press release was went with as Operation Bandemic covered more than just the City of Newburgh, and it gave enough details without hindering further law enforcement efforts.
We do publicize the good work that our police do. Anybody can look at their social media to see that.

Councilman Anthony Grice the city’s press release alleged I claimed in my report that the city was skewing crime statistics in its mandated reporting to state and federal agencies. That’s not what was alleged in the report, or by anyone, whatsoever. Furthermore, the city attempted to attack my credibility to deflect from the actual allegations by saying neither News 12 or I are credible.

Blaise Gomez you claimed that the City of Newburgh had a gag order. Not true as the police leadership is in agreement. You claimed that the City of Newburgh was not responding to your emails. Not true as a response was given to most of them within 24 hours, including the ones you posted. Further, since November 2022, a weekly report of crime had been provided on the City webpage for all to see. The press release included the Police Commissioner.

Councilman Anthony Grice in response:
1) Department heads notified us last year that they can no longer communicate directly with the media and that all inquiries must go through City Hall. That has been described to me by city officials who can no longer speak on record as a gag order. Mid Hudson news also addressed this issue and the lack of communication from the city themselves in a report yesterday following the city issued press release and Dave Hoover’s response. https://midhudsonnews.com/.../breaking-city-officials.../
2) My emails are frequently not responded to and ignored as shown with unanswered inquiries in my report. Those were never responded to, as are my inquiries last week about an update on the investigation into a woman found deceased and a reported stabbing.
3) Weekly arrest reports are great but that’s not the same as press releases or information about reported events happening on a day by day basis, especially when many do not result in an immediate arrest or one at all.

Blaise Gomez it is in fact not a gag order. Further it is not a new policy, just being enforced. Again, part of why our Police leadership also made a quote. While I understand the need for unnamed sources, we do not hide behind that. I have already addressed Mid-Hudson News and Hoovler.

Councilman Anthony Grice when people are ordered not to speak, it’s a gag order.
