Well, some of what you say resonates as true, the real reason I ran as an Independent in addition to my growing disillusion with the local (city & county) Democratic party was because I'm not dumb.

Firstly, there would be NO way I could have made it through the primary election running Democratic line with limited funds and name recognition. Additionally, the ignorant city and county Democratic leadership blindly support problematic incumbents as long as they fall inline with their directives. They have no scruples considering their Chair (Orange County Democratic Party) was arrested and convicted of stealing yard signs of a Republican candidate.

Secondly, competing as an Independent ensured I would automatically advanced to the general election and offer competition to Harvey's reelection. Additionally, it only took 182 petition signatures versus 600+ signatures required on the Democratic line to get on the ballot.

As referenced many times in this thread, a large portion of the problem lies with ignorant voters (referenced as "dumb"). They conflate the current national-level party conflicts as substantive factor to apply to voting for local elections. Party affiliation doesn't matter at the local level.

Until, we are able to truly 'educate' voters that they need to vote based on each individual candidate and what they bring to the role without regard to party label, Newburgh will continue elect frauds, bullies and snake oil salesmen. And trust me, I am hopeful but I'm not naive to know this will most likely never happen.

Hael Stewart-Fisher
Former City of Newburgh Mayoral Candidate
