Proposal to give Newburgh City Council large raises shot down by vote of 4-3

November 14, 2024

NEWBURGH – A proposal that would have given the Newburgh City Council sizeable raises in 2025 was shot down by a vote of 4-3 at Tuesday night’s regular session.

Council members Patty Sofokles, Ramona Monteverde, Robert Sklarz, and Giselle Martinez voted against the proposal. Newburgh Mayor, who vehemently supported the raises at Tuesday night’s session, and council members Robert McLymore and Omari Shakur voted for it.

“Unfortunately, I could not vote in good conscious for the (raises) due to a few personal conflicts,” Martinez said. “For the record, the amount of work that goes into this is extremely exhausting. It is full-time and around the clock. Encourage the people who don’t see the work to come to our City Council meetings because we do work hard and you will continue to see us in the community.”

Harvey said he was disappointed with the outcome of the vote.

The proposal had called for the mayor’s salary of $25,000 a year, up from the current $15,000, a 66.6 percent increase for Harvey. The biggest raises would have gone to the two councilmembers-at-large – McLymore and Shakur, whose real name is Raymond Bryant. Their annual pay would increase by 87.5 percent, going from the current $12,000 per year to $22,500.

The remaining four council members who are elected by ward – Sofokles, Monteverde, Sklarz, and Martinez – would have seen their annual salaries increase from the current $12,000 a year to $20,000. All seven members of the council serve on a part-time basis. In addition to their salaries, they receive taxpayer-funded health insurance and are in the state pension system.

Four years ago, the city council voted itself 33 percent pay raises while the mayor received a 66 percent pay hike.
