EXT – SCHOOL YARD – NIGHT
PAN: The school yard is empty at night, leaves all over the floor – one of the windows is boarded up. A banner saying “Goodbye to the class of 2006” is hanging off of the fence around the tennis courts.
From nowhere somewhere comes sprinting through the night, crashing through the gates – they’re being chased.
The person stops as we tilt up to see Darren Summers.
DARREN
Hey, isn’t it a bit late to be out on your own?
The girl looks at him lost
GIRL
I…I’m on my way home, why were you following me?
DARREN
I wanted to kill you
GIRL
What?
Darren plunges a stake into her heart and she bursts into dust
DARREN
Nothing personal
(O.S) VAMPIRE
It is to me
Darren turns round and the vampire grabs him by the neck, pinning him up against the wall
VAMPIRE
That was my girlfriend – you know what I do to people that hurt my girlfriends?
(beat)
Nothing compared to what the people that kill them get
Darren is pulling at his hands trying to break free – he falls to the ground, as the vampire becomes dust. Dawn is revealed, holding a stake
DAWN
Told you you’d love having me around eventually
Darren looks up a bit pissed as he still rubs his neck

INT – DARRENS HOUSE – MORNING
Anne – Darren’s Mother (MMH) is preparing breakfast as the phone begins to ring.
ANNE
Summers residence
DAWN
Hey
ANNE
Who’s calling please?
DAWN
It’s Dawn
ANNE
Oh hey Dawnie! Wow you’re up early isn’t it like…2am over there?
DAWN
It is, I’m not up early I’m up late
ANNE
Honey you need to get more sleep, this isn’t good for you
DAWN
Aunt Anne my flights in two hours
ANNE
Oh god! I completely forgot
DAWN
That I’m staying? Way to go!
ANNE
No, the time of your flight
(beat)
Hold on
ANNE
Darren you’re going to be late!!
DARREN (O.S)
I’m coming!
ANNE
Sorry about that
DAWN
Darren doesn’t know I’m coming right?
ANNE
Nope kept it a surprise like you said
DAWN
Cool, good – I guess I’ll see you tonight
ANNE
Okay sweetheart
Darren slomps into the kitchen and grabs his Mother’s toast from her plate
ANNE
Okay sorry I don’t want new windows
DAWN
Darren there?
ANNE
Yes, okay bye!
Anne hangs up the phone and snatches the toast back from Darren
ANNE
I bought you an alarm
DARREN
I threw it out the window
ANNE
Darren that cost me money!
DARREN
It cost me sleep!
ANNE
So, you looking forward to it?
DARREN
Is that rhetorical?
ANNE
I don’t know why I bother
DARREN
It’s 8am we don’t do questions
ANNE
Just get in the car
They both step out of the house and wonder down the drive – Darren stops before he gets in the car
DARREN
Don’t drop me right outside
ANNE
Do you have any friends? You’re like a bitter old man
DARREN
I have friends
ANNE
Who Jamie?
DARREN
Get in. Drive. Leave
Anne rolls her eyes and smiles as Darren gets into the car.
CUT TO.
EXT – COLLEGE – DAY
Jamie and Darren are dordling through the courtyard as hundreds of student’s buzz around
JAMIE
I don’t like it
DARREN
It’s new
JAMIE
Too new, I can’t decide what course to do
DARREN
I figure there should be an ology in there somewhere – you know intelligence
JAMIE
Ooh yeah I’m doing erm aromathology
DARREN
Therapy
JAMIE
Not in my books
Jamie and Darren hold the door open as a girl in a wheelchair comes through and goes straight past them
JAMIE
You’re welcome!

DARREN
See you’re making friends already
JAMIE
I can’t believe we still have two weeks until lessons actually start – so here we’re just like…why are we here?
DARREN
We’re enrolling oh so special child
JAMIE

INT – JAMIES HOUSE – NIGHT
ROSE (Jamie’s step Mum)
You’re late
JAMIE
You’re not my Mother
ROSE
That’s big of you Jamie
JAMIE
I don’t think someone with a back like that is in any place to call me big
ROSE
That’s enough!
JAMIE
Blah! When’s your loser son coming back?
ROSE
My son is not a loser – I thought you sorted everything out in Boston
JAMIE
We sorted him out – not us, when is he back?
ROSE
Tomorrow – he said something about his friend needing help back in May, he’s been travelling since
JAMIE
Travelling alone for four months? That figures.
ROSE
Why do you dislike me so much?
JAMIE
I don’t dislike you Rose, I hate you – a lot
ROSE
Go to your room
JAMIE
Go to hell
Jamie takes a drink from the fridge, slams it shut and storms out past Rose.
CUT TO.
INT – DARRENS HOUSE – NIGHT
ANNE
Darren come in here please
DARREN
I didn’t do it
ANNE
Do what?
DARREN
Nothing
ANNE
Very clever – you know whatever it is, I’ll find out
DARREN
Why have I been summoned?
ANNE
What?
DARREN
You called me in here?
ANNE
Oh the err, the exchange student – arrives in an hour
DARREN
Way to warn me!
ANNE
It’s what I do best
DARREN
What exactly are we getting out of this?
ANNE
The student
DARREN
So why aren’t they getting me?
ANNE
Because they’ve done nothing wrong
DARREN
That was cute – really
ANNE

DARREN

INT – AIRPORT – NIGHT
Jamie and Darren are sat opposite the terminal doing a spot of people watching
JAMIE
Okay she’s a lesbian mother of two who once used to paint baskets for a royal
DARREN
No she’s a single lesbian guitarist who discovered the Spice Girls
JAMIE
You’re getting bad at this
DARREN
Says she with the lesbian obsession
JAMIE
Yeah didn’t you know I’m gay?
DARREN

JAMIE

DARREN

JAMIE

So it’s entirely possible we’ve missed them

Darren holds up a sign “Freaky Foreign kid for the Summers”
JAMIE
You know it looks like you’re offering to be a rental kid?
DARREN

JAMIES

DARREN
Haven’t seen them
JAMIE

DARREN
You already asked
JAMIE
If they’re a cute guy can they come stay at my place?
DARREN

DARREN

They both look up in horror as the strangest looking creature leaves the terminal. We’re talking greasy hair “made by mother” clothes and short trousers in winter.
GUY

DARREN
Do I know you?
GUY
You hold sign for student exchange
DARREN
Oh, um, no this is to exchange gifts
GUY
I bring you gifts yah
DARREN
We’re exchanging, um, drugs
GUY
Oh. Yah I like to get high
JAMIE
Go away. The signs not for you.
GUY

JAMIE
I am of this sure as hell. You’re not my type please move along.
GUY
No wonder everyone hates your country
He spits at Jamie’s feet and walks off
DARREN
Man, that was cold
JAMIE
Gotta be blunt with those kinds of guys
DARREN
Which kind is that?
JAMIE
Ugly
DARREN
Not to shallow then?
JAMIE
I have hidden depths.
Darren is about to make a comeback as a bag hit’s him in the back of the head
DARREN
Hey watch it!
He stands and turns to see Dawn standing their smiling
DARREN
What the hell are you doing here?
DAWN
Pleased to see you to
DARREN
We only see each other if news is of the bad kind
DAWN
Not bad. Just, things have changed a lot in Boston and well, nobodies there anymore.
DARREN
Oh. Well, we’re waiting for some exchange student and…
DAWN
It’s me. It was so I’d be a surprise
JAMIE
Darren, who is this?
DARREN
Jamie you’ve met her three times in the past year
JAMIE
Oh. Must have repressed it.
DAWN
You broke both my arms when you were eleven
JAMIE
My bad.
Silence.
JAMIE
Okay I feel family tension, I’m going to – go take a real long pee and meet you at baggage claim.
Jamies wonders off as the other two stand awkwardly.
INT – BAGGAGE CLAIM – NIGHT
Darren places Dawn’s bags on the trolley as they begin to walk off
DARREN
So you visiting or what?
DAWN
No. Buffy’s back in Los Angeles with the slayers apparently this years apocalypse saw the last of the academy
DARREN
So I heard
DAWN
I’m going to stay with the council. The really small council which consists of just Giles and Willow and a small hut in the woods in Westbury but it’s the council all the less.
DARREN
Pretty
DAWN
Oh I should probably mention…
ANDREW
Hey!
DAWN
Andrew’s on vacation for a week
DARREN
Joy.
ANDREW
Hey Darren how’ve you been?
DARREN
Headache free. You?
ANDREW
Very good. Thank you, I’ve spent since June travelling the country – not this one, America. My boyfriends working in New York with Harmony and so I took a vacation.
DARREN
Good for you.
Jamie wonders back over and grins upon seeing Andrew
JAMIE
We ready to leave? Airport Gap is only interesting for thirty minutes or so.
DARREN
I’m way ready
They begin trailing off as Jamie pulls Darren back.
JAMIE
Do I know him? He’s cute.
(beat)
You think I’ve got a chance?
DARREN
Really don’t.
CUT TO.
INT – CAR – NIGHT
ANNE
I told you Dawn I’m not angry I just wish I’d known he was coming to stay with us
ANDREW
You didn’t ask her?!
DAWN
I forgot?
DARREN
Yeah, right
DAWN
What does that mean?
DARREN
It’s from the latin yeah and right
DAWN
Bite me
DARREN
Not without a jab first
ANNE
Kids!
DARREN/DAWN
We’re not kids!
ANNE
Adults! Behave
Anne slows the car down as they approach a broken down van
ANNE
Should we help them?
DARREN
I’ll check it out
Darren gets out of the car and heavily slams the door shut.
ANNE
Okay who’s pissed him off? I’m serious I have to live with him
JAMIE/ANDREW/DAWN
She did it / She did it / He did it
ANNE
Good answer
DAWN
He’s just cranky
JAMIE
So, Andrew – what’s your deal?
ANDREW
Um, well I came over from America where I live with my boyriend and…
JAMIE
(Rolls eyes)
Great story. What’s taking him so long?
Darren gets back into the car.
DARREN
It’s empty. They probably already left for help
DAWN
Are you sure it’s empty?
DARREN
I don’t know. Go check for invisible people!
The car pulls out and is about to continue under the bridge as a body falls onto the bonnet. Anne has been knocked out.
ANDREW
What was that?
DAWN/DARREN
I’ll check it out
DARREN
(to Jamie)
Stay with Mom. Make sure she’s alright.
Darren and Dawn walk over to the body
DAWN
That’s not dead
The vampire turns over before flipping to it’s feet
VAMPIRE
But you are
DARREN
Yeah, yeah
Darren smacks him down and stakes him as he’s falling
DAWN
Smooth
DARREN
I try.
They both look up as another six vampires jump off the top of the bridge
DAWN
Sixty forty?
DARREN
Fifty fifty
Darren moves through three of them so that they take attention to him. He boots one in the face as he’s doing a back flip. As he lands he comes round into a spin kick and boots the vampire into a tree branch.
Dawn spins round and stakes a vampire accidently – smiling at her achievement
The two are now back to back with the final two vampires.
DAWN
Over
Darren bends over and Dawn rolls over his back – she stakes the vamp instantly and Darren flips the other one over, tossing his stake through to the ground and hitting the vamp
DAWN
Crazy
Darren throws Dawn the dirtiest of looks.
ANDREW
What the hell was that?
JAMIE
(underbreath)
That’s what I’d like to know
