Mules weren't officially authorized as rations until the day before the surrender. A reason was the hunger of the men. A sneaky reason was that it prohibited Grant from making use of the mules.

So what is deer corn? What was the name of the place which provided the parched corn? Great stuff. I remember it was some place in Texas.
