May I refer you to the book "Terry's Texas Rangers", In 1864 a member of this unit was captured, his uniform consisted of federal blue pants, blue overcoat, and a hat with the Texas star affixed. Although wearing federal clothing, the star was accepted by the federals as his Texas uniform. He was later hung though for being a spy by covering up the star and pretending to be a federal.
The orginal Texas stars were widely used by Texas troops and were made from silver Mexican Pesos. They were silver and not brass like the modern ones you see today.
They were worn on the breast as well as the hat, but not sure how many as Silas siad would have survived till 1864?
If ya'all really want to have the mark of a Texas troop I would suggest the toothbrush in the button hole. Col Fremantle of the English Army even observed this wide spread use.
I remain YOS.....Dusty Lind
