Take a glance through Portriats of Conflict Texas in the Civil War, there are all kinds of stars attached to uniforms from all periods. As a 10th Generation Texian I can tell you that we (natives) have a lot of state pride. In reading letters, diarys, and books of the time one would notice they had lots of pride back then also. I do agree about the peso cut star, you can find period mexican currency very very cheap and have it cut or do it yourself. I have a peso that I cut out myself.

I would forgo the toothbrush and just put a coon "part" in your hat.
