Subject: The Double 8-Miler

Boys,

My apologies for my on-line hiatus- the college has been closed for Spring Break so I took a few days away from cyber land with the wife, child, oh yeah, and a bunch of sewing projects.

Anyway, during that time off, I threw on the kit for the big shakedown cruise- two 8 mile marches, in full kit, on back-to-back days. Did the first segment last Wednesday afternoon and the second Thursday morning. Both days were mid-70's, decently cloudy with a good breeze. I made it with no problems but I was tired as heck. My shoulders, particularly the right one where the haversack and canteens (I carried two just for kicks) rested was really sore for a day or two. My feet were tender but not trashed so that was good too. I weighed each day and on both occasions I sweat out 3 pounds. That makes 6 in two days and I don't consider myself a drenching sweater. What that means is that water consumption, starting NOW, is priority numero uno. I hope the rest of you are swilling the clear stuff as well. Hold off the malted hops and fried chicken until we're done with this.

Not sure that this is anything really worthy of a post, but I did want to share my experiences after 16 miles of hard walking.

Our two prime areas of attention- heat and feet. Either one will knock us flat so do your utmost to show up in good order.

Regards,

1st Sgt. James Jones
