I sometimes despair when some people (the vast majority - too busy/lazy to get off their back sides and organise something like the FW - and I include myself in that) do nothing but knock (not including myself in that). Keep it up. The organiser might get really pissed off and think 'why bother - let someone else organise it'.

>1)WHY NOT ALLOW THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER RIDEN BEFORE THE
>OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE FIRST CHOICE TO RIDE RATHER THAN
>THE SAME NAMES APPEARING AT THE FRONT OF THE RESULTS
>BOARD YEAR AFTER YEAR? DOES IT MATTER IF SOME FAST BOY
>BEATS 6HRS? NO! BECAUSE AS I AM TOLD IT IS NOT A RACE.

This is the first time I've ridden the Fred Whitton and I can't praise the organisers highly enough. I made my mind up after seeing a bit of last years event that I'd give it a go this year. Got some more winter miles in, kept an eye on the web site, and got my entry in as soon as it opened. Not rocket science, just need to want it badly enough I guess. If I hadn't got in, I'd have tried again next year. Nice cross section of shapes/sizes/abilities riding it too I thought. As for it not being a race. I don't see it as one, BUT, and I think most who've ridden it will agree, if I am lucky enough to get in next year (and there'll be nobody more disappointed than me if I don't), I'll be trying to beat this years time. Is that classed as racing?

>2)WHY NOT ALLOW ALTERNATIVE DATES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
>ALLOWING A RIDER TO HAVE A CHOICE. A GREAT WAY TO
>GENERATE MORE MONEY FOR THOSE CHARITIES AND CONTROL
>RIDER ENTERIES THROUGHUT THE YEAR. 1 RIDER RIDES ONE
>EVENT UNLESS UNDER SUBSCRIBED.

Nice idea, but I guess we'd then start getting complaints from 'other road users'. I've no idea how the police and local authorities view these events. Are they keen on them? Do they turn a blind eye? I really don't know.

>3)OFFER AN ALTERNATIVE SHORTER DISTANCE FOR THE NOVICE
>RIDERS ON A DIFFERENT LESS TECHNICAL ROUTE.

Naaah. It's the Fred Whitton Challenge. It's supposed to be tough. Leave it at the one distance, stress how hard it is and let folk decide if they're up to it. There are other shorter/easier sportif rides throughout the year. Anyone unsure can perhaps try some of those first.
You have to take some responsibility for yourself when you're over 16 you know.

>4)IF THE ORGANASATION OF THIS EVENT IS TOO MUCH FOR
>THE CLUB THEN WHY NOT USE A THIRD PARTY TO RUN
>PROCEDINGS? SUCH AS BRITISH CYCLING? THEY HAVE VAST
>EXPERIENCE AND A WEALTH OF HELPERS TO CALL UPON.
>THESE ARE ONLY MY SUGGESTIONS I'M SURE THERE ARE OTHERS

What makes you think the organisation is too much for the current organisers? That's not what I came away thinking. In fact, I thought what a bloody slick operation it was. Timing, food stops, marshals telling me at the top of passes to take care on the descents, marshals pointing me in the right direction, having my time and a certificate within 5 mins of finishing. Paramedics on hand. What exactly didn't you like about the organisation?
