We were once mighty. Oh how the mighty have fallen. We were unto this world like gods, but gods we are no more. Time passes, on so quickly does it pass, and things evolve. Yet we remain unchanged. Dragons be our larger kind, our winged cousins of the sky. They are feared, much as we had been. That fear never died for them. But we? We the dwellers of the ground, under the dirt, the soil, the water. We under the cities, the hills, the mountains. We have lived for hundreds of near thousands of years.

We remain unchanged.

And we are dying out.

Not by our own hand. Not by the hand of our natural enemy, but by the hand of another enemy. One that is not natural to us. We cannot stay on this world for much longer. Already our numbers grow smaller and smaller. We can not replace them as quickly as we die. For every one born there are two killed.

My heart grows sad to see ourselves die, but it is not all in vain. We are scattered, and I fear that scattering will eventually end. We will be wiped out here.

I only pray to the gods that we can survive. Vain attempts to prevent the inevitable had failed, time and time again. I have not seen the light of the sun in so many years. Hiding and trying to rebuild what was once our proud race.

We were once kin to the dragons, but we have been forgotten. Lost to history for them, and shunned when we do meet. They have forgotten the roots, but we do not forget. We only forget, when we do not exist.

And from words of the topside world, the time when we do not exist will not be too far off.

I only hope I can protect this nest.
