Johan nodded to the twelve in front of him; powerful fighters all. Some of the finest examples of hogoromo's military might.
There on the table before them lay a large map of Aurora, many regions marked off as already searched. Johan's hand scratched his chin slowly as he looked around. "As you can see, the most likely areas have already been eliminated as possible nesting locations; these areas would have been too obvious anyhow... the Ith'Dakar, for all their vileness, are not completely instinctual, nor are they stupid. I suggest that we start looking in unlikely areas," he said, and watched one of the forgotten's eyes stray just a touch, an instinctive, sympathetic wince crossing the man's face.
Johan had explained that a combination of illness and injury had required the amputation of his wings, something every single one of his knights had sorrowed to see happen to him.
"I would say by your logic, Master Johan," one of the men, an overkill, as all of them were, chimed up, "They're close to the Ty'frr, in the unsearched areas. It makes perfect sense; the Ty'frr are their natural enemies, no one would dream they'd hide next door to them."
Johan almost smiled, then nodded, "I would tend to agree with you; we haven't hunted there, the biggest problem is that the region is mountainous. There are several score of possible entrances to an Ith'Dakar hole, only a few of which will be actual entrances, while others may in actuality be cleverly laid traps."
Johan sighed, and brought out another map, this one of that specific region, but more detailed. "So, we need to eliminate as many of the possibilities as we can, or we'll end up walking into all sorts of fun," he said as they all leaned over, peering at the map.
"Look, there is something we can use; see there, a hot springs," the one from before piped up, and Johan nodded gravely, "How so?" Johan asked, though he already knew the answer, he just wanted to see how wise this young warrior really was.
"Well sir, the most direct entrances wouldn't be too close, or too near there, sir. Ith'Dakar love to set up hatcheries near those kind of places... so the entrance wouldn't be very close... but a nest this size can't be extremely large, or we'd have noticed long ago... not only that, if they thought themselves safe, they wouldn't go to too much effort, so there is only a few places they'll put an actual entrance."
Johan almost clapped; that was a textbook, strategic explanation. "Very good, anything else you can offer?" Johan asked softly, and almost sighed when the overkill shook his head.
"I see, then learn a lesson here. When you are outnumbered, and you take up hiding near your enemies so they won't look for you there, you never have an entrance into your home that faces their home; if someone of them is moving around, and one of you passes by that entrance, they'll see you, and then you're not hidden anymore... not even escape routes should go that way, because otherwise, you run right into more enemies if another attacks you. The Ith'Dakar, not being stupid, understand this, and would place themselves accordingly."
Johan scratched his chin again, then his eyes narrowed, "That cuts the number of possible entrances in half, so now lets look on the other side of things. If someone hunts you, you might normally look for something easily defended... unless you are blatantly overpowered or outnumbered. We have in the past, repeatedly proven that even a small number of our knights can clean out a nest, leaving few survivors, using superior tactics and bypassing all normal defenses..." Johan looked thoughtful, "They won't therefore, choose a defensible position. It is too obvious... they'll pick a position that is tactically difficult to defend from the outside, and work to fortify the inside, make it more difficult once you have taken a few steps in; this has obvious advantages and disadvantages... so I won't go into them... now, time to hunt, go in slow... and quiet."
