I was supposed to get my 3rd chemo today. The drug is called Navelbine and it's notorious for being hard on the white blood cells (WBC's). You need your WBC's to fight off infections. If it get's low enough, you need to be hospitalized to avoid contracting something.

These were my counts today:

WBC = white blood cells
RBC = red blood cells (carry oxygen)
The numbers in the parenthesis are the "within range or normal" numbers.

Needless to say, my counts were to low to get chemo.

My doctor also put me on an antibiotic for 7 days. It's called Levaquin. I imagine he put me on it just to protect me from infection.

I go back next Thursday to try again.

I hope you're not discouraged at all. As you said, Navelbine is very hard on white cells. But apparently the problem normally occurs within the first couple weeks of treatment, and the white count typically goes back up after a few days. My dad had to skip a treatment for that reason, but his counts were ok the following week. I'm glad he's putting you on an antibiotic--probably a wise precaution!

I wasn't discouraged at all. I saw it as a benefit because it was my Mom's birthday. We were going out for crabs and I wanted to feel good while eating them.

Stacy,
greetings from a fellow low WBC (under 2.0 for 10 years). I was happy to see the copter picks and my girlfriend loves pugs, but I prefer the terriers (boston or bull). Still up here in Johnstown. If you are looking for a racing weekend at Jennerstown Speedway give me a call, I can accomodate a medium size entourage, schedule is on jennerstown.com I think. (night are already getting colder up here.)
