I've had a busy week this passed week and I'll have even more of a hectic week this week. I finally finished planting azaleas and flowers on the hill outside my house. I also got the entire area mulched. Boy that was a lot of work. Probably more than I should be doing but I'm hardheaded when I want to do something. As some of you know.

It sure feels good to be doing something physical even though I wear out pretty quick. My hill looks gorgeous if I do say so myself.

I went to Cecil County Dragway with my brother today. We towed a friend of his truck to the track and watched him race it. It sure was chilly out there and breezy!! But I still got sunburned on my face.

My Aunt Nancy from North Carolina is coming up this Tuesday to help my mother after her surgery. It's always wonderful to see her, she is such a special lady!

Wednesday we are taking my brother Mark out for steamed crabs to celebrate his 42nd birthday. His birthday is actually Saturday the 15th but Mom will be layed up so we are celebrating early.

Thursday Mom is going to Upper Chesapeake Hospital to have her third surgery on her foot. This time she has a new surgeon so hopefully they'll get it right this time.

Friday I start my next round of chemotherapy.

Lord knows what I'll get into after that!!

Sounds like you had a productive weekend! I went to a Baysox game in Bowie on Friday night. They stopped the game in the bottom of the first inning, at about 7:30, due to a thunderstorm. We waited for an hour, and it was still raining and still thundering, so we left. I found later that they finished the game after a TWO HOUR AND FORTY-EIGHT MINUTE rain delay! That means it was almost 10:30 when they restarted the game. I had given a couple tickets to a friend, who brought her son and her boyfriend with her--they actually stayed for the game, and didn't get home until 2 a.m.! I did a little yardwork on Saturday--trimmed the hedge, and put down some fresh mulch. Exciting, huh?

I'm not sure if I'll go or not, but this coming Saturday is the the first Arcadia demolition derby of the year. http://www.arcadiavfc.org/DemoDerby/derby.html
It's usually a fun event (especially if the weather is good!).

Nice Mothers Day pics! Did you "kids" get you a card?

No I didn't get any cards but my Dad called me and wished me a Happy Mother's Day. When my brother and I took Mom out to lunch, both Mom and I got roses from the restaurant. So at least I got a rose.

It supposed to be pretty hot with a chance of thunderstorms on Saturday so have fun and keep cool if you go to the derby. I don't know what I'm doing yet, I'll have to decide what I do based on how my Mom is doing after her surgery. I may hit a car cruise, visit with Mom, or something else.

Back to chemo tomorrow....

Stacy,

So glad to get your message this morning! Those pictures of you, Mark and your Mom and Dad are great!!!! I'll say a little prayer for you and your mom today... hope chemo goes ok.. or at least as well as can be expected. :)

Sounds like you're turning into quite the landscaper. I just love working in the garden... it's quite good for the soul. My only problem is I am disappointed after everything blooms and I have no color left in the garden.

Well, I gotta get back to work. Have fun eating crabs with Mark and your mom tonite!! Happy Birthday Big-bro!!!!!

Sorry to hear you're having such a tough time at work. To be honest, I don't miss it one bit!! I miss some of the people but that's it. I'm sure the reason the due date for uploading was moved because the report is usually due on the first and Patty has to have time to reconcile all of them AND complete the report. That's why I always made my uploads due by the 15th from everyone. There is a lot of work behind the scenes that has to be done. And of course, inventory work is "behind the scenes".

Thanks for the pictures of your kids. They were really cute!!

The camera I used is just a Canon Sure Shot. It's takes awesome pictures especially when it's sunny out.

Give me a yell sometime when you have some time, I'm still waiting for that lunch. My schedule is much more flexible than yours!

Hey Stacy! How are you doing these days? Sorry I haven't written in awhile. Thought I would drop in and say hello. You are doing some GREAT picture taking at the track. Well as it looks now Dave & I will be heading up there on Saturday May 29th. Hopefully you & Mark will be able to make it we would like to see both of you. We have been wanting to drop by Roy's on a Friday but he has really been working hard on his car to get it done so it's been a little hectic to do much of anything as you probably know he changed his car over to alcohol so with the change came work on other things. Well anyway hope your mom is doing well and recovers quickly. Talk to you soon...

I really enjoy taking a lot of pictures. It's one of my favorite hobbies.

Friday was awesome at Roy's. It was the biggest turnout I've seen there. You should really try to get up there to check it out!!

I'll go to Cecil if Mark wants me to go with him. I love to go but I only go if he asks me. I hope he wants to!

Mom has been doing pretty good with her surgery. She's had some pain but very tolerable. Fortunately her sister is up from North Carolina and has been taking care of Mom. This way Mom can listen to her doctor and stay off her foot and keep it iced. We're hoping and praying this was the last surgery on her foot!!

Thanks for dropping by and saying hello! It's getting too quiet in here.

Depending on how well my mother is doing decides whether I ride up to Roy's or not. The doctor expects her pain to be the worse 24 to 36 hours after her surgery. She had surgery at 9:00 this morning. I'd like to go but I'll have to see. At least if I do go I know I won't freeze!! This heat is too much!!

Hey Stacy, how's things going? Glad to see you got the pics, I love that one of Mark kissing you. The one of you kissing him was really good too. Do you remember it? All he said he remembered was the sweater he was wearing. Had a great talk with your Dad last week and he stopped up at the yard sale Saturday...not once, but twice lol He had gotten some of Dads tools. I hope your mom does okay with her surgery. Hope Chemo went well today. Take it easy and talk to you soon. Love Pam

Hi Pam, sorry I didn't make it to the yard sale. I was going to go but then Mark asked me about going to the track. I can't turn that down!! Yea, Dad told me he was up there twice and bought tools. It worked out great for him because he needed the kinds that he bought.

That's too funny about what Mark said about those pictures. I don't remember it either but I do remember his sweater. I think I ended up with it at some point. Thank you SO MUCH for giving them to Mark to scan. I love them!! Let me know if you have more.

How are things going this weekend? Any excitement?
I did chores yesterday, then Michelle came over for dinner. I cooked chicken wings on the grill--delicious! My parents were in town, staying at my brother's house in Laurel, so we went down last night to see them. My dad is doing pretty well. He's losing hair--it's getting patchy. But he feels pretty good, and he didn't seem tired last night. They're going home today, and he has chemo tomorrow. Michelle and I wanted to do the Bay Bridge walk today, but the weather didn't look too good. It's not all that much fun on a wet, cloudy day. I hope it doesn't rain on me later today--I want to cook on the grill again!

Hope you're feeling good!

I had a pretty good weekend. I went to Cecil County with Mark on Saturday to watch ProMod racing and cars that typically do 8s in the quarter mile. There were quite a few cars that did 5s and 6s in the quarter mile also. Pretty cool! Check out Mark's web site if you want to see any pictures from Saturday. We left there and went to Big M to eat a little dinner and see if any cars were still there. There were a few but not a lot since it was trying to rain. Mark and I will be going to Cecil County again this Saturday if it's open to the public.

I'm glad you got to see your father this weekend. If you check out the top of this site, I posted a clickable link to a cancer web site that is EXCELLENT!! It's called Cancer Care Network. There are a lot of things that you can research there including information about your father's cancer. There's a link to a chat room on that site too if you ever want to go in there. I go occasionally. I used to go in there daily but I just don't have the time anymore. The people in there are the best group of people I've found in any cancer chat room. All of them have been touched by cancer in some way in their lives with friends, family members, or themselves. If you ever see "cautious2day" in there, that's me.

I saw coverage on the Bay Bridge walk on the news and wondered if you went or not. It would have been nice if the weather would have cooperated a little more.

Do you ever go see Great Train Robbery anymore? I haven't been in ages.

I've been doing a bit of weeding and clearing out brush out back of my place. It's really looking good if I do say so myself. I'm becoming quite the little landscaper. I'm trying not to do too much at any one time though so it's taking me a while to get everything the way I want it.

I haven't done to much around the yard here. I really need to trim the bushes--they've gone nuts in the past couple weeks. I did manage to spray "weed-n-feed" tonight. (You know you're an adult when you stop using killer weed and start using weed killer....) One of these days you'll have to find a few free minutes to show me your handiwork! (I'm up that way a lot, since Michelle lives in that part of town, near Walther and Putty Hill.)

You've been going to the drag races a lot, but I know you also like sprint cars. Have you ever been to Lincoln Speedway in PA? I think it's somewhere between Hanover and York. http://www.lincolnspeedway.com/

My dad is back into chemo this week. This was the first week of the cycle, so he had 2 drugs. My mom said he's feeling fine. He gets tired quickly, and he's losing hair, but otherwise he's doing well. He installed a new water heater this week, after chemo. I guess we won't really know anything until his next scan, after 3 months. So all we can ask at the moment is that he handles the chemo well, and so far, he's doing that.

Hi Cliff. Yes, I've been to LINCOLN quite a few times. I used to go there almost every Friday night a few years ago. Sometimes Saturday nights too. I love watching those Sprint cars. I would go on regular nights that featured the Pennsylvania Posse and I would go to see The Outlaws when they were there. I also used to go a little further up to another bigger track called Williams Grove where The Outlaws raced more often. We had reserved seats at Williams Grove for one year. I think about going to Lincoln once in a while by myself but I just have't done it yet.

Your Dad must be feeling pretty good to install a hot water heater. The fatigue is cumulative so he may get more tired as time goes on and feel less rested.

I did more clearing out back again today. I want to try to get finished before the cicada's show their faces. I don't want to be out there getting bombarded by them if I can help it. I would be right in their feeding grounds so I'd rather just be finished so I don't have to fight them. I guess that pretty much so means I only have the rest of this week before they start coming out. The news gave this schedule:

May 7th - May 14th = they will begin emerging from the ground. Up to 200 per exit hole in the ground!!!

May 15th - May 21st = widespread cicada's in central Maryland

May 22nd - sometime in July = INFESTATION!!

That's the word they used!! I'm not afraid of them but I don't care to get bombarded while I'm outside. I expect quite a few around here since they say infestation is heavier near wooded areas. I suspect Tyler will have a ball since he likes to chase flying bugs or basically anything that moves outside.

I can remember at least 3 "cicada years" in one place or another. I don't recall them landing on me, or really bothering me at all. What I remember most is the NOISE! Those things are LOUD! Since you have the woods adjacent to your house, you'll probably hear them all day, non-stop. I can remember cutting the grass, and being able to hear them over the noise of the lawn mower! Beware--your pups may decide to EAT cicadas! My family had a dog who would eat any that she could find.

I've done a lot of weeding, clearing out brush, and now planting azalea's and marigolds. I've seen A LOT of those exit holes that the cicada's make. If 200 of those little suckers come out of each hole I suspect the infestation is going to be right around my house!! LOL!! This could be interesting. Just as long as they stay off of all my new landscaping!! Always something interesting going on around here! When I get my pictures developed, I'll post pictures of how my little garden has grown. I still have a bunch of those WAVE petunia's to plant and another tray of marigolds. It's going to be colorful. It already is but it's going to be so pretty when the petunia's start blooming!

It will put a little emoticon next to the "subject line" of your post.

So far so good with the insurance company. Even after it was straightened out I didn't receive a check on time so at first I thought that was messed up. But I discovered that now it's going in direct deposit and I get the statement a couple days later. What a pain to have to keep after this stuff!! If I remember correctly, you and Jack actually had cancer insurance also. That had to be a blessing for you. I wish I had that but now I suppose it's too late to get it. You can't already have cancer and get it, can you? Fortunately my Mom just got it recently so if anything happens with her, she'll have it!!

How is your friend with lung cancer doing? A friend of mine just found out his father has it also. He writes on here a lot.

As for the shot in the stomach, I almost recommend getting it in the arm first to see how that is. If it's painful then try the stomach. Then you can appreciate how much better it is. If it's painful in the stomach for someone there's no place better to go to. Kind of like we have to have the rain to appreciate the sun!!

I love going to car cruises! I try to go at least once every weekend unless I have other plans. But I enjoy if I go Friday and Saturdays. The advantages of being single!! I can go anywhere I want whenever I want without having to worry about making someone else upset that I want to go often!! I also really enjoy going to the track to watch the races. It's actually the sound of the motor that I really love and I get to hear a lot of that at the races. I got sunburned on my arms last weekend. I wasn't expecting to. They say you're not supposed to be in the sun when you're on chemo but daggone it I'm going to live!! Next time I'll just have to take sun block!!

Hi Stacy, A great picture of you and Tyler. You look great! I hadn't been on your site for awhile and thought that I would try to send a message this way. I am glad that the stomach works better than the arm for the shot. I will pass that on to my friend that has lung cancer and is getting chemo. Also, I was relieved to read that all went well with the insurance. I know what a scare that can be. When Jack had his cancer I contacted the company that we had cancer insurance with through school, and the first thing they said was that we no longer had it. The reason was that we had missed a payment. Well I knew that wasn't true since Baltimore County sent it in. Long story short--after many, many calls and insisiting on talking to someone with authority it was straightened out. I am telling you this so that if it happens again do the same---don't let up as the insurance companies make lots of mistakes!!! The sad thing is you have enough to deal with the cancer treatments you don't need insurance headaches too! You are a strong lady!!!! I enjoyed the cruise pictures. Jack and I did car cruises for years with a group of friends. It was always a lot of fun. Now instead of vettes we are all into grandchildren activities!!!!!!! We continue to remember you in prayer daily. Enjoy your break week. I am sure those weeks go fast. Jack and I send our love and prayers! Bonnie I am new at this so I don't know what to do with the message icon!!

Well, I get home after chemo and about an hour later I got the chills. The awful fever kind of chills. Within two hours I had a fever of 101.2 and was freezing my buns off!! Major body aches. I called the doctors office and he called me back. After assessing all my symptoms he's pretty certain I now have a bladder infection.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

It's a good thing that I NEVER ask "what else can happen" or "what now???". Don't ever ask because you'll ALWAYS find out.

Anyway, he called in an antibiotic and Mom went to pick it up for me and she brought me a 44oz soda. THANKS MOM!! Hopefully I'm on the road to recovery now. Daggone it, I want to go to that luncheon tomorrow!!!!

Hi I was surfing and noticed your post. Astragalus root and Milk Thistle are very helpful during chemotherapy. You can get these in pill form or tea and both are usually found at your local health food store. I am sure the one over in Forest Hill by Little Caesars has the stuff.

They have also done studies linking Astragalus Root to remission in cancer patients. Forget what the percentages are, but the outcome is very promising.

I figure modern medicine can only be assisted with what nature has given us to work with, so if this is something you would like to look into ask your Doctor

Many wishes for your speedy recovery!

Author:
Stacy

I went for the second treatment of this round of chemo today. The actual treatment went very smoothly as it always does. I have to say when I arrived I was quite disappointed that "The Price is Right" was not on television. In fact the TV wasn't on at all. We ALWAYS watch THE PRICE IS RIGHT during our treatments.

I asked the patients if they minded if I turned it on and actually a few patients were excited at the idea. Good Heavens, it just isn't chemo without ole' Bob Barker!!

I turned it on and we were all happy. Since I had the remote, the other patients even wanted me to turn up the sound. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY!!

They tested my blood and found that my counts have dropped so that meant I had to get that very painful shot.

I requested to have it given to me in my stomach instead of the back of my arm. Needless to say I was quite nervous about it. I didn't want the shot to begin with but I couldn't help but think "oh my God, in my tummy??". It was my decision but it still made me very nervous.

The nurse took me into the bathroom for privacy from the other patients. She grabbed a roll of fat (and that was pretty easy for her to do) and proceeded to apply an alcohol rub to the VERY tense area. She asked me if I was ready..... NO! But I said YES.

Right as she went to stick me with the needle I went to raise my hand. Of all things, I hit her arm.... the arm that was attached to the hand that held the needle. Well, the needle stung quite a bit and I'm sure I made it worse by hitting her arm.

I stood there waiting for the pain to come. It didn't!! I was astounded!! ABSOLUTELY no pain from the injection!! The needle stung a bit but that was tolerable. BUT the medicine in the injection was painless!! ABSOLUTE SHOCK!! I walked out of that place a happy camper and with a huge grin on my face!!

This is the one time in my life I think I'm happy to have rolls of fat in the tummy area!! And once again, I'm doing the dancing chicken!!!

I wish I didn't have to go through it either, but look on the bright side... if I didn't have cancer, I wouldn't be going through chemo, then I wouldn't have the side effects that KEEP ME HOME with a paycheck. I get to be home everyday with my babies doing whatever I want to do... whenever I want to do it!! I get to sleep in every day that I choose to and that's wonderful. Plus I had the time to plant a bunch of bulbs in the fall since I was home. And now I get to be home to enjoy all the beautiful flowers that came up. I am so proud of myself, I actually planted bulbs AND THEY GREW!! Now I've been weeding the flower garden outback, clearing out the brush of all the vines, fertilizing and putting "good" soil down and putting out grass seed out front under the tree. Now I can be home to make sure it get's watered so IT will grow too!! Then I can take a nap afterwards!! LOL!

I am so thrilled that the tummy is much more tolerable than the back of the arm. The needle itself stings like a big bee sting but the medicine doesn't hurt going in. The sting in the back of the arm is a piece of cake compared to the pain once the medicine goes into the arm. You'd think they'd put some numbing medication in the needle to help make it less painful.

I have every intention of beating this damn thing!! I gotta be here to learn how to drive RATTRAX without slamming on the breaks and get to drive RATTRAP for the first time and hopefully without any problems!!

Well I had to get the nurses attention somehow! LOL! That's a shame you couldn't go to Kentucky with the rest of the family, I know you would have really liked it. If I remember correctly when you were a kid you went to Kentucky once and LOVED it!! Does my memory serve me correctly or was that just a figment of my imagination?

Hey, How are you? Yes you were right about Ky I was there when I was younger and loved it. Went there a year ago in August and Loved it even more. I talk to Mom everyday and they have had a great time, not a lot of rain. They will be back on Saturday, making a stop at Charlestown Slots on Friday and staying over. If work allows it, I plan to meet them there, but will head back that nite as I have to work a double on Sat. Look for the pics some time next week. Take Care.

This is the 4-28-04 CHEMO UPDATE.

I went to chemo today instead of tomorrow so that I can go to a luncheon for two people I worked with that are leaving Verizon Wireless. They are starting their own general contracting company.

I had to have the Aranesp shot again today so of course I had it in my stomach again. This one was even better than last weeks. Normally they give it once every two weeks but my blood counts have dropped even more so they went ahead and gave it to me.

This was the final treatment in this round so next week will be my break week.

****************************************************************************************

A little advertising here for the two guys I mentioned in the beginning of this message....

If you need any general contracting work (i.e., air conditioning, heating, plumbing, basic repairs, installations...) please contact

SCOTT MURPHY or STAN ALLEN
EX-SITE SERVICES
410-353-3548

Scott has taken care of all me and my Mom's air conditioning and heating problems at a reasonable price. He did excellent work. Both Scott and Stan were the maintenance engineers at Verizon Wireless and are highly respected.

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS??

The following information is from WBAL Channel 11 news and WJZ Channel 13 news.

(WBAL) Officials Expect Millions Of Cicadas To Reemerge This Spring. Cicadas Emerge Every 17 Years, After Underground Feeding Period.

BALTIMORE -- After 17 years underground, millions of cicadas will emerge throughout Maryland and the East Coast this spring.

The critters are harmless to humans and animals -- they do not bite or sting -- but their egg-laying may cause some plant damage, according to Maryland Department of Agriculture officials. The last time the cicadas emerged was in 1987 when as many as 100,000 cicadas per acre disrupted outdoor events and sounded off with loud, almost deafening mating calls.

"They're coming out, they're ready, they're prime, they're going to be all over the place, probably 12 or 15 per square foot," said professor Dr. Mike Raupp.

(WJZ) The time frame for this year's cicada invasion has been moved up thanks to mother nature. The seventeen year cicada should now appear around May 5th or 6th instead of late May as originally predicted. The change is because of warmer weather in the last few week. The cicadas need a ground temperature of 64 degrees to climb out of their holes in the ground. Right now, the temperature is rapidly approaching that figure. Experts say the positive side of the cicadas arriving earlier is that their six week stay will be over sooner than expected.

Hope you had a good weekend. I did the March of Dimes walk in Baltimore yesterday (about 7 miles). Michelle walked with me--she somehow hurt her foot (before the 2-mile mark), and didn't tell me until the walk was over! She didn't want to "wimp out," as she said. My employer is a local sponsor, and we (home office) raised $48,000. The walk started and ended at Phillips headquarters near Ft. McHenry--each walker got a free crab cake after the walk! I felt great--I think I could have kept on going, and walked the route a second time if I'd wanted to. As soon as I got home, I went out and cut the grass (because Patrick had a cold). This coming Sunday is the Bay Bridge Walk. I'd like to do that, if the weather is decent. But now I seem to be catching Patrick's cold--I hope it's just a mild one.

My dad is doing ok, although after 3 weeks, the chemo is catching up with him. He's starting to feel the fatigue, and he's losing what little hair he has. But he's keeping his weight up so far, and the blood counts have been pretty good.

So how are you feeling now that a couple of days have passed? Are you sore? Did you catch Patrick's cold? How is Michelle feeling? I've checked out her website, pretty cool.

I'm glad to hear about your Dad that his counts have been good. Hopefully he won't have to get the shots to replenish his blood. The fatigue can be the worse part of going through the whole chemo thing. Did you say he's on a three on and one off regiment? If so, I guess he's on his break right now. This week is my third of this round then next week will be my break. I've been doing pretty good the last two weeks. I had quite a bit of fatigue today but otherwise feel pretty good from chemo.

However, I've been feeling a little achy this evening so I took my temperature. I had a little temp of 99. My normal is a little over 97 so that would be like the normal person having around 100 degree temperature. I took some Advil hoping that takes care of it. I sure hope I'm not getting some kind of an infection again.

I had a scare in the last few weeks about my health and life insurance. I was told by Human Resources before I went on Long Term Disability that I would continue to have my health and life insurance at no cost to me for the life of the LTD. I confirmed that numerous times since it was a deciding factor for me as to whether or not I would go on LTD. Well I started getting all these letters a couple of weeks ago and another one last week saying that my coverage would end as of April 30th and I would end up having to pay over $300 per month just to have insurance through COBRA. Needless to say I wasn't very happy. I couldn't get through to the Benefits Center and the woman in Human Resources wasn't returning any of my calls. I ended up calling her supervisor's right hand person since the supervisor was on vacation. I finally got this woman on the phone yesterday. Anyway, she researched the whole thing and called me back today to confirm that I do have the life and health insurances at no cost to me for the life of the LTD. The benefits center called me today to confirm it also. THANK GOD!!! I didn't know how in the heck I was going to pay for it each month. I'm glad that I still have insurance!!

I wasn't sore after the walk. I joked that I could have walked the route a second time that day. Michelle, however, still has a sore foot. The Bay Bridge walk is coming this Sunday, and I'm not sure we'll be able to do it. I DID catch Patrick's cold! I felt rotten yesterday, but much better today.

Yes, my dad is on the three on, one off plan. This is his week off. They were hoping to visit this week. As of yesterday, it was still a "maybe," depending on how he feels. I think he tries to pretend that he has a big "S" on his chest, but I guess it catches up with just about everyone.

I'm glad you still have your insurance! COBRA is NOT cheap! Sure, you get the group rate, but you have to pay the full cost--no employer contribution.

By the way--nice picture of you and Tyler!

Here is the latest update on my condition.... I started my third round of chemotherapy today. This makes the 13th time I've had this drug (Gemcitabine). I've had considerable fatigue with the last round so my doctor is changing the regiment of how often I get chemo. Starting this round I will have chemo once per week for three weeks with one week off in between rounds. I was having chemo once per week for six weeks with two weeks off in between rounds. He is hoping this will alleviate some of the fatigue and he is hoping it will help keep my blood counts at a higher level.

I have also been having a lot of problems with my stomach since I have been taking so much Aleve for body pain and for the blood clot. The doctor is changing the regiment for that as well. I will also be taking two prescription strength Zantac's to help. He is concerned that with the problems I've been having if I keep taking the Aleve like I have been (which is how he told me to take it), I could end up with a bleeding ulcer. I certainly don't need that.

So far as of today.... the blood clot is looking good, my blood counts looked real good today so I didn't have to get that painful shot AND I haven't had any body aches yet.

I thought this was so cool when my friend sent it to me....
I like to do huggs this way too ;)
{{{{{{Stacy}}}}}}
I hope you enjoy this little story as much as I do :)

~Huggs!~
(dedicated to "Patty")

"Hey, Dave, you spelled "hugs" wrong. You do it all the time. What's with
that?" she wrote.

I replied, "No. It's not wrong. I spell it that way intentionally."

"Why do you always spell it that way?" she asked.

It had simply become habit. But there was a deeper reason.

Many years ago, when I was first online, I had regularly corresponded with a
lady I met in a penpal exchange. She spelled the word that way. And I had
asked her the same question. So she explained it to me something like this:

There are lots of different kinds of hugs, but they are just ... well ...
hugs. There are hugs that are hurried. There are hugs that don't really hold
you tight because they are afraid of what someone else might think. There
are hugs that are only given because it is the polite thing to do, hugs that
are nervous, hugs that are hesitant.

In fact, if you watch people long enough, you begin to realize that most
hugs are very superficial. There are one-armed hugs in passing, the
"burp-the baby" hug, the "oh my gosh, don't mess my clothing" hugs, "I'll
call you later" hugs that have no intention of calling later, and many more.

"Huggs" are not like that. When I send you a hugg, it means that I care
about you ... a lot! A hugg means I wish you the very best life can bring
you. It means that when your life is not right, it makes me sad ... because
I really care. It means when you are happy, I am happy for you.

Huggs embrace sorrow, celebrate joy, convey compassion, hold your hand when
you are afraid, and walk that long mile in the dark with you. A hugg would
never walk away and leave you alone ... never!

Huggs do not always have the answers. Sometimes huggs can do nothing to
change the circumstances of your life. But one thing is certain ... huggs
will always be right there with you ... no matter where life takes you.

Quite simply, a hugg is a commitment to friendship ... not just when it is
convenient or makes me feel good ... but always and forever. A hugg is a
statement that says you are important to me and that no matter where life
takes either of us, you will always be important to me.

Huggs have no price. Huggs are priceless ... just like you. If you have a
friend you care about this much, tell them. Send them a hugg. Because after
all, we can never get too many huggs! If you share this story, all I ask is
that you give credit where credit is due. This story belongs to me, David
Chiasson, and can be found here:

My doctor gives me a shot called Aranesp. It's just like Procrit but it's better. It stays in your system longer than Procrit. But it also hurts A LOT more!! That's the shot that I refer to in my posts as the "painful shot". If I need my platelets and/or my red blood cells replenished, I get the shot once every two weeks. If I were on Procrit, it would be once a week.

My doctor, the nurses, and other patients had said in the beginning that it's a real painful shot. My doctor said if I can't tolerate it then we would switch me to Procrit. The shot is SO painful that the next time I have to get it, I'm going to try getting it in my stomach instead of the back of my arm. Other patients have told me it's a little better in the belly. If it's not, I'm going to ask my doctor to switch me to Procrit.

Sorry for the late reply.
Working a few hours at night and a few hours during the day can sure be a pain in the butt.
I'm glad to hear that you're doing great.
I'm looking for those pictures to send you.
And yes...I still have that 'Cuda. I can't wait to get it all restored this year. And when it's done...maybe I'll give ya a ride in it. :) J/K!! I'll let you drive it. Just don't tell my wife that. :D
I'll send you some pics of my car when I 1st had it all ready to paint 15 years ago. It was all primered and ready until, can you believe, it was hit on the rear quarter and the week after the other rear quarter by 2 different uninsured motorist.:( What luck huh?
Anyways, be praying for you.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Talk to you soon.

Hi Cliff. I had a real nice Easter. Mom, Dad, and Mark came over for dinner. I cooked fried chicken again and I have to say it was really really really good!!! Dag, I can really cook fried chicken!! We all spent the day together eating and looking at old pictures.

The day before, Mom and I went to Clinton, Maryland to see her sisters and a distant cousin that were up from North Carolina. We went out to lunch and then played cards (Rook) all afternoon. We had a real nice time.

THEN..... yesterday, me, Mom, her two sisters, and the distant cousin went to Millersville to visit with my great uncle and his wife. We went to Hella's for lunch and it was awesome!!!

I'm glad I'm on a break this week from chemo, I don't know how I'd fit everything in!!

How was your Easter? How is your dad doing?

I can't wait for the rain to stop, we need some major sunshine and warm weather!! I think we're overdue!!

My weekend was ok. I spent Saturday afternoon running all over town with Michelle, my girlfriend. Her son is taking guitar class in school, and loving it, and she wants to get him a nylon-string guitar for his birthday (next month). Needless to say, I'm assisting with that. We were hitting various music stores to see what's available, and what price she can expect. I THINK we found what we want. I had dinner at her place on Sunday. She fixed a nice dinner. Unfortunately, Patrick was acting like a whining little kid. This coming Saturday, Michelle is making a birthday dinner for her mom. I met her mom briefly last month, but this will be the first time that she gets to interrogate me like a communist spy. At least the food will be good!

Sounds like you and Michelle are doing pretty good. Hey, you and her son have something in common, the guitar. Have you shown him anything yet? At least Michelle can cook, huh. A communist spy, huh? I would have thought she would have done that the first time she met you but I guess she didn't have enough time. I suppose you'll be on your best behavior. YEA RIGHT!

Yeah, things are going very well with Michelle. I think I'm going to keep her for a while! I've been warned that her mom hasn't been happy with Michelle's choices in boyfriends in the past--but I've also been told that she was probably RIGHT about it. So hopefully I'll break that that pattern. I haven't been showing Michelle's son much on the guitar. We've talked about guitar, but mostly just talk. He's learning very quickly at school, so I don't want to do anything that would conflict with way he's being taught now. Besides, he seems more interested in classical guitar, which is not really my thing.

My dad had chemo on Monday. Mom said it went well. So far, no side effects. But then, he's only had 2 sessions so far.

It's been over a week now since you got your long-awaited (and VERY welcome) news. How are things going? How was chemo this week? It must feel a little different now. Before, you were HOPING it was working. Now, you KNOW it's working. I know you enjoyed the sessions, because of the people there, but do you feel even better about it now?
[> Subject: Hi Cliff

Author:
Stacy

Date Posted: 10:51:12 04/03/04 Sat

Well, I've been really tired this week. It's the first week of my two week break. Chemo last week has taken quite a toll this week. Last week the nurses told me I didn't have to come in this week for that very painful Aranesp shot since my blood counts looked so good. I was actually tempted to go in there yesterday to have my blood taken to check my counts. You have to know I have been exceptionally fatigued to even consider going to possibly get that shot. I decided not to go and I will see how I feel Monday. If I'm still as tired as I have been, I may ride over there.

I'm still optimistic that the drug will continue to work but I also have to keep in the back of my mind that anything can still happen. The cancer is not gone yet. There is no cure, even if I go into remission... all that means is the cancer is no longer detectable which is a good thing. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's truly gone from my body. Although miracles happen. The cancer in my lymph nodes are no longer detectable but I will always be concerned that there is a cell lingering somewhere just waiting to attack someplace. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I'm just a realist. So all in all I'm thrilled that the drug is doing what it's supposed to do but I still have a ways to go since it's still seen on CT scans in my lung.

Your father's doctor may or may not suggest a port-a-cath. If the nurses have trouble sticking him he may want to mention it to his doctor. The nurses always have a hard time with me no matter where I go for whatever reason I have to have a needle. So the port-a-cath is great for me. When you get a CT scan with dye they have to inject the dye through an IV in your arm. They can't use my port so it's always a nuisance to go. I usually get stuck several times before they find a vein. Fortunately though the last two times I've had the same VERY COMPASSIONATE woman. She is successful on the first try but with very little mercy on me. She goes for it and get's it but feels bad because she knows she has to hurt me to get into the very deep and "crooked" veins. YOUCH!!! So if your father has a tough time or starts to have a tough time, he can suggest it to his doctor. He doesn't have to wait for the doctor to say anything to him.

I guess that's enough for now. LOL!! Since I've written a book....

I know the cancer isn't GONE. The doc told my dad the same thing: they don't cure it, but they manage it. Drive it down to an undetecable level, then monitor it; if it comes back, attack it again. The encouraging thing is that while it's in remission, modern medicine advances, and new treatments become available. I know there have been a lot of developments in treatment since you first had it in 1999. So if your Jim-ceta-Beam works now, there will probably be even more effective options later--maybe even a cure one day. ENJOY THE SUCCESS!!! Realism is good, but so is OPTIMISM!!!

Have no fear, I am trying to enjoy the SUCCESS as much as possible. It's been a little tough for the past week or so, I have been incredibly tired. I went to see the nurses today to ask them to take some blood to check my counts. I was afraid they may have dropped and I may have needed the Aranesp shot to replenish my platelet count. Fortunately they looked good so I didn't have to get the shot. They reminded me that the side effects including the fatigue is cumulative with each treatment. I'm feeling so tired simply from the chemo. They said it'll probably get worse from here on out. GREAT!! I saw my doctor for a moment in the waiting room and he said I just need a vacation from the chemo. Thank GOD for this two week break, I need it bad. Once I'm feeling better, I plan on enjoying the heck out of the good news!! I don't want to change chemo drugs since this one is working, I'll just suffer through the fatigue.

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalen and Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought sweet spices, that coming, they might annoint Jesus. And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came to the sepulchre, the sun being now risen. And they said one to another, "Who shall roll us back the stone from the door of the sepulchre?" And looking they saw the stone rolled back. For it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed with a white robe; and they were astonished. Who saith to them, "Be not affrighted; you seek Jesus of Nazareth Who was crucified: He is risen, He is not here, behold the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples and Peter that He goeth before you into Galilee; there you shall see Him, as He told you."

Hi Cliff. Actually I've seen lots of people have to take the combination of carboplatin and taxol. The taxol will make him lose a lot of his hair, if not all of it everywhere. They will probably give him Benadryl and some anti-nausea medications through the IV each time he goes. The Benadryl will make him very sleepy so I hope your Mom can be there with him to take him home or at least can pick him up when he's finished. They give the Benadryl to counter-act any allergic reactions. It doesn't happen to everyone but some people do have some reactions. They will monitor him closely the first time they give him the chemo so they have a good idea how he will react. That is if there is any reaction at all.

I've never taken carboplatin but I did take taxol. I would highly recommend a port-a-cath if he is going to be on chemotherapy for a while. It certainly makes chemotherapy treatments and blood tests A LOT easier. How are you doing with all this? Are you going to go visit him?

He had his first session today. I tried to call this evening, but I couldn't get through--the line was busy. But one of my brothers talked to my folks. They said the first session went well, with no noticeable side effects. My dad had said the he had made up his mind that he was not going to get nauseous! He may lose hair, but he doesn't have much to lose! Apparently the doc told him it probably wouldn't affect his facial hair--he was glad to hear that, because he's had a mustache since the late 1940's! They haven't mentioned a port-a-cath, so I guess the doc hasn't recommended one at this point.

I'm doing fine--I guess I'm naturally optimistic. I'm trying to figure out when I can get up there to see them--I have to work around Patrick's school, and I'd have to coordinate with the rest of the family--my folks don't have a big house!

For years and years they told me,
Be careful of your breasts.
Don't ever squeeze or bruise them.
And give them monthly tests.

So I heeded all their warnings,
And protected them by law.
Guarded them very carefully,
And I always wore my bra.

After 30 years of astute care,
My gyno, Dr. Pruitt,
Said I should get a Mammogram
"O.K," I said, "let's do it."

"Stand up here real close" she said,
(She got my boob in line),
"And tell me when it hurts," she said,
"Ah yes! Right there, that's fine."

She stepped upon a pedal,
I could not believe my eyes!
A plastic plate came slamming down,
My hooter's in a vise!

My skin was stretched and mangled,
From underneath my chin.
My poor boob was being squashed,
To Swedish Pancake thin.

Excruciating pain I felt,
Within it's vise-like grip.
A prisoner in this vicious thing,
My poor defenseless tit!

"Take a deep breath" she said to me,
Who does she think she's kidding?!?
My chest is mashed in her machine,
And woozy I am getting.

"There, that's good," I heard her say,
(The room was slowly swaying.)
"Now, let's have a go at the other one."
Have mercy, I was praying.

It squeezed me from both up and down,
It squeezed me from both sides.
I'll bet SHE'S never had this done,
To HER tender little hide.

Next time that they make me do this,
I will request a blindfold.
I have no wish to see again,
My knockers getting steam rolled.

If I had no problem when I came in,
I surely have one now.
If there had been a cyst in there,
It would have gone "ker-pow!"

This machine was created by a man,
Of this, I have no doubt.
I'd like to stick his balls in there,
And see how THEY come out!

Hello Big Brother!! Mom and I went shopping today, as usual. We ate at Chili's in White Marsh. It was pretty good.

I met Dad at Aunt Betty's last night. Fried oysters was on the menu. Not my cup of tea but I was starving so I ate some. We played Dominoes all evening. Had a really good time. They about froze me out of there. They were all hot and turned on the AC. I left my hat at home so I was quite chilly!!!! BRRRRRRRRRR....

I hear those birds singing too!! What a wonderful tune they sing, huh. And I see all the sunshine too!! It must be lighting the way for us to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Where did you go dancing? I'm glad you're having such a great time, it's about time!!! Remember me when you go to Cecil, I'd like to go again this year.

Well going back to work will at least pay the way for more fun!!

Love you 2,
Stacy

Did you tell your girls the good news? Mom went with me to the doctors today because she wanted to hear the good news for herself. When the doctor said "you're really boring, I had a hard time finding it" with a huge smile on his face, she practically leaped into his arms and hugged him. And of course thanked him. When my doctor says you're boring, that's good news!!!

You know, one of the things that I've been doing is drinking a lot of milk!! It's funny, I have been craving milk like crazy since I started chemo in September. So I've been drinking A LOT of it. Then around December or January I heard on TV that vitamin D and calcium help shrink tumors. Isn't that ironic?? So needless to say I've continue drinking A LOT of milk.

As for Mark, I love my brother to pieces. I wouldn't trade him for the world. I am so proud to say "that's my brother" especially when he's racing!!

Thanks for the prayers!!

Hi Pam! Dad is still having quite a bit of problems. He still has chest and arm pain but the doctor insists it's not his heart. Although they want him to take nitroglycerin tablets or a patch. I wish he'd get straightened out. There's a chance it possibly could be a nerve in his neck but he is so claustrophobic he doesn't want to go in for an MRI.

Mark posted the picture. He knows how to do all the fancy stuff from having his own website. I'm trying to learn from him.

FABULOUS NEWS!!!

I just got back from the doctors office. My cancer has shrunk incredibly!!! The ones in the lymph nodes are practically gone and the ones in my lung have shrunk to the point it's harder to see them. My doctor said that he's never seen anyone respond so quickly to the drug he's giving me!!! He also said my blood counts look so good I don't have to get that painful shot next week!!!! YEA!!!! AND.... my blood clot in my leg is healing. He was going to put me on a heavier dose of a blood thinner but it looks so good he's not going to. When I left there I had to go to K-Mart and I got the first parking space in front of the building. My brother told me this is a good day for me, I should buy lottery tickets..... SO I DID!!!!

Now I can do the dancing chicken!!

KEEP THOSE PRAYERS COMIN'!! OBVIOUSLY THEY'RE WORKING!!! THANK YOU LORD ABOVE!!!

And my littlest dog max, was white, and he would go in the yard and be brown again in minutes....giggles...silly dog.

THE FIVE FINGER PRAYER

1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

Love the picture, the one in the middle is my favorite. I don't know how you get them to all sit together. I have a hard enough time getting one of mine to sit still!!!

Have a good day, I hope you were right about your results.

Hello everyone. I just got back from having my tests done. The mammogram looks fine, no problems there. Thank GOD!! As for the CT scan, I see my doctor tomorrow and he will read them and let me know the results.

However, granted I'm no doctor but when I compared the films to the last ones done in December, I can't find anything similar to the last time. It looks considerably smaller to me. BUT.... like I said, I'm no doctor. When I compared the December films to the time before that in October, I suspected a little growth at least from what I could see. And unfortunately I was right. So I'm hoping that I'm right about todays films too.

Keep the prayers coming! Hopefully they're working.

Hey! So you got to look at the "snapshots," and the big C doesn't look quite so big? Oh wow, I hope you're right! I remember a few months back, after the doc told you that, although there was no cure, the cancer might be kept in remission, you said you were going to "kick this thing in the a** and get my life back." KICK IT, STACY!!!!

Hi Al! I found out on July 31st last year that the cancer came back in the lymph nodes in my chest and in my right lung. When I saw you I was actually going through chemo, I started it in September. I just hadn't lost my hair yet. I am still going through chemo. Lost my hair but now there's about an inch of re-growth. Some of the side effects are tough sometimes particularly the fatigue but not hardly anything can keep me away from cars. Mark asked me to go to Cecil with him in the fall and I wasn't about to say no. :) And I plan on being back again this year but long before the fall. I also like to go to the car gatherings on the weekends as much as I can especially if Mark is going to be there.

I'm glad I at least looked healthy. I hear that a lot... especially "if it wasn't for your hair I wouldn't have known". I'm really glad that I keep my coloring. I'm getting treated at Good Samaritan Hospital in the professional building.

Thanks for checking in with me!! Check back again! It was good hearing from you.

Subject: A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOUNTAIN

Author:
STACY

I wrote this poem during my first encounter of breast cancer in 1999. Hence the name of this website.

*********************************************************************

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MOUNTAIN

A lump, a sonogram, and a mammogram.
Then an inconclusive biopsy.
My world is turning upside down.
A high mountain and a dark sea.

So many unforeseen challenges.
Suddenly mystic roads untraveled.
Family and friends lives in a balance.
Struggling not to become unraveled.

Advise of untrusted results.
Go in to have this thing removed.
Possible results could incur.
Few procedures behooved.

The tumor is malignant.
Perform a lumpectomy.
Lymph nodes dissected.
Will there be a mastectomy?

Promptly see an Oncologist.
Adriamyacin, Cytoxin, and Taxol.
Eight long rounds of treatment.
Eight injections of toxins.

Blood vessels are small and deep.
Best to get a port-a-cath.
Another surgical procedure.
This is the wisest path.

The treatments cause side effects.
Although blood counts unaffected.
Many physical changes.
Off to radiation I am directed.

High hopes of finality crushed.
Expected radiation treatments delayed.
Doctor didn’t like pathology reports.
My nerves are getting frayed.

A second kind of cancer.
Overlooked by the others.
More surgery in site.
What’s next to be discovered?

Another mammogram and more.
CT and bone scan to see.
Has this cancer traveled?
And formed another malignancy?

A full body scan of bones.
A nuclear dye injected.
Collapsed vein from the needle.
Now it has become infected.

All the anxiety from waiting.
All worries and doubts relieved.
No metastatic malignancy.
My body has been reprieved.

An antibiotic takes care of me.
Superficial thrombophlebitis no more.
Only remains of a sore, hard, warm vein.
The least of my problems, I’m sure.

A time to climb a different kind of mountain.
And face a left breast mastectomy.
My life is totally changing.
Tougher than a lumpectomy.

A different kind of mountain.
I can only imagine and strive.
To endure every crevice and slope.
Fighting to stay alive.

If it means to stay alive.
Lose my left breast I must.
God holds my dearest destiny.
In God I truly love and trust.

Chapter 1: THE PERKS OF BEING OVER 50
1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run a marathon.
4. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
5. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
6. Things you buy now won't wear out.
7. You can live without sex but not without glasses.
8. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
9. You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.
10. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
11. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
12. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.

Chapter 2: GAMES FOR WHEN YOU ARE OLDER
1. Sag, You're it.
2. Pin the Toupee on the Bald Guy.
3. 20 questions shouted into your good ear.
4. Kick the bucket.
5. Red Rover, Red Rover, the nurse says Bend Over.
6. Doc, Doc, Goose.
7. Simon says something incoherent.
8. Hide and go pee.
9. Spin the Bottle of Mylanta.
10. Musical recliners.

1. You sell your home heating system at a yard sale.
2. Your husband jokes that instead of buying a wood stove, he is using you to heat the family room this winter. Rather than just saying you are not amused, you shoot him.
3. You have to write post-it notes with your kids' names on them.
4. The Phenobarbital dose that wiped out the Heaven's Gate Cult gives you four hours of decent rest.
5. You change your underwear after every sneeze.
6. You're on so much estrogen that you take your Brownie troop on a field trip to Chippendale's.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... Your sweetie says, "Let's go upstairs and make love," and you answer, "Pick one, I can't do both!"
"OLD" IS WHEN..... Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes, and you're barefoot.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... Going braless pulls all the wrinkles out of your face.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... You don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... "Getting a little action" means I don't need to take any fiber today.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... "Getting lucky" means you find your car in the parking lot.
"OLD" IS WHEN..... An "all-nighter" means not getting up to pee.

If you're under 50, this may be amusing.

If you're over 50, this is probably reality

I have a CT scan and a mammogram scheduled for March 24th. That will tell the doctor if this drug is working. I'm praying that it is!!!! I have an appointment with him on the 25th but I don't know if he'll have the results that quick or if I'll have to wait until the following week to hear the news.

Unfortunately I have developed an obstruction in one of the veins just below the surface on my leg. I had a Dopplar Sonogram on the 17th and it showed there are obstructions all the way from my ankle almost up to my groin. It's called a "superficial thrombophlebitis" which basically means it's something like a blood clot. I will be on a heavier dose blood thinner (the doctor said for a while) and they will watch it to make sure it doesn't move. They also watch to make sure it doesn't get into a deeper vein. That can be very dangerous. What I have is not dangerous so far but if it moves they may have to take other measures to take care of it. My ankle started swelling today a little bit so I suppose I'll be calling the doctor in the morning.

I also found out the lymph nodes in my groin are enlarged. I'm hoping that's just because of the clot. I'll have to get more details on that.

I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in July 1999. I had DCIS in my left breast and one left axillary lymph node. I went through a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. I was diagnosed with metasticized stage IV breast cancer in July 2003. It came back in eleven paratracheal lymph nodes and two masses in my right lung. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy. Although there is no cure, we are hopeful for a remission.

Please feel free to communicate with me through this forum. Share your comments, feelings, are just simply send messages. I look forward to hearing from you.
