I don't know yet about the chemo. We had talked about Navelbine a while back ago. But to tell you the truth I don't know if he'd want to go that direction now since it's so hard on the white blood cells since I've been in and out of the hospital. But I really don't know. I see him again on Monday. If I'm well enough from all I've been through, we'll talk about my options. I imagine he'll set me up for another CT scan soon but he hasn't said.

Since I've been home from the hospital, I've been fighting an infection. It's called Clostridium difficile, nicknamed C-Diff. Not that you really want the details but for other possible cancer patients reading this site....

Clostridium difficile or C. difficile is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions such as colitis. It is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients in the industrialized world. It is also one of the most common infections in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The use of antibiotics increases the chances of developing C. difficile. Treatment with antibiotics alters the normal levels of good bacteria found in the intestines and colon. When there are fewer of these good bacteria, C. difficile can thrive and produce toxins that can cause an infection. The combination of the presence of C. difficile in hospitals and health care settings and the number of people receiving antibiotics in these settings can lead to frequent outbreaks.

Symptoms include:

watery diarrhea (at least three bowel movements per day for two or more days)
fever
loss of appetite
nausea
abdominal pain/tenderness

I had most of the symptoms. One of the unlisted symptoms for me was severe pain in the bathroom and A LOT more frequency. It was probably because of the Steven's Johnson Syndrome and my membranes being so irritated. Anyway, I'm on an antibiotic and I'm a lot better. Not 100% but I'm getting there. I'm still weak but laying in a hospital bed for two weeks then sitting on your butt for two weeks can probably make you weak regardless of what you're going through.

The fun just never stops, does it? I hope all this stuff clears up soon, so you can get back to your "mission" of beating that cancer.

I hadn't thought about the white blood cell issue with Navelbine. I know it tends to have a rather strong effect on them when treatment first begins. When my dad was on it, the third treatment was canceled because his white count had dropped too low. It went back up after that. But I guess if your white blood cells have been busy lately, the doc might not want to strain them any more!

My mom knew all along that if anything ever happened to my dad, she'd have to sell the house. She met with the realtor the weekend after Dad passed away. The contract came from the FIRST people to look at the house! It looks like she'll be coming down here over Labor Day weekend. I'll probably go up there with one of my brothers, and my brother-in-law, to help her move. She'll stay with another of my brothers, in Savage, until my sister and her husband find a new house with an apartment for her.
