Ha ha, you are right, the Catholics are ridiculously too conservative on some issues. For example, admittance of innocence of Copernicus only after centuries of scientific advancement in the secular world was really an extremely big joke.

But we may think about the unity issue in another direction. Protestant fundies hate the Catholics, some even accuse the latter of heresy. Promotion of the ecumenical movement presents a challenge to the accepted norms of the fundies and forces them to reflect on their position, hoping that that can let them open up their attitude a bit. So, although uniting with an amusingly conservative denomination per se is questionable, ecumenical movement is nevertheless a good first step to take to challenge the Protestant fundies.
