I'll bet you that DVDs ARE cheaper to make now, since the quality has improved, there are dual-layer DVDs, and now that we know how it works, have introduced cheaper, more effective ways to produce them. Also, DVD players cost so much then because there wasn't an established market, and it was a new technology. VCRs were the same way when they came out. As far as a $50 DVD player is concerned, I'm believe in the school of thought that dictates "you get what you pay for." Just my two cents.
