The results of that poll, I believe, are unsurprising. It's great that you posted it, though.
Howard often justifies his opposition to same-sex marriage by arguing that he's speaking in the interests of the majority of Australians. I don't believe this is so. Contrary to what the polls say, I believe that there is only a small minority of people who oppose same-sex marriage -- devout Christians (and Muslims) and radical feminists (who would not support any form of marriage).
I believe that everyone else is either fully supportive of same-sex marriage or has not adequately considered the issue such that he or she is able to form an opinion. The latter, I believe, can easily be persuaded to support same-sex marriage. Perhaps I'm biased, but I feel that the arguments for same-sex marriage are much stronger than the arguments against (which, largely, are irrational or extremely radical).
Generally, Australians are reluctant to support change. But I think that we have, at last, reached the stage where Australians are beginning to realise that gay people are equal in worth and dignity, and should therefore be afforded equal rights.
I was hopeful that a Labor government, if elected later this year, would support same-sex marriage. It seems, however, that it would not. Instead of supporting something that is right, they have decided to oppose it in the fear of alienating the bunch of rednecks (who, primarily, vote Liberal and National anyway) who are vehermently opposed to the idea.
But, alas, there is still hope. Governments have been known to break election promises. :-)
