The fact that you collapse everyone who doesn't support gay marriage as either radical feminists or devout Christians (or Muslims) is, I blieve, really problematic.

I don't support gay marriage. I don't support marriage. I don't support Howard's latest move, and I think Labor's is absolutely contemptuous. Why? Because Howard is clearly looking for another Tampa to ride an election win in on. And because Labor's so high and mighty in coming out saying that it supports the interests of gay and lesbians, but then it comes to the crunch, it's clear it's all just rhetoric. At least the Libs are honest!!!!

But the bigger issue is, I think, how you dismiss opposition to gay marriage. The reason I don't support gay marriage is because I think it's important to resist assimilation. I also believe that marriage is based on the idea of ownership - men over women - and that it's against the interests of progressing gay and lesbians to begin to replicate our relationships in terms of sexism and patriarchy.

Can someone spell out to me why it's so important that we gain 'recognition'. Why is this so important? Why do we care about tolerance? Surely we should be fighting for a celebration of diversty from oppression, rather that legal recognition.
