I have yet to read a compelling reason to change the current practice. Lets just say that the evidence of referees missing knock-ons etc when short-cutting the scrum provides a compelling reason against it.

And some of us "dinosaurs" as you so rudely refer to us as have seen the consequences of short-cutting the scrum: something blatant missed and a referee made to look pretty silly.
