Boys boys boys. I always held the whistle between the thumb and forefinger with the fingers slightly intruding over the top. BUT the most important thing to learn is the use of the tongue. Stick the tongue in the throat of the whistle and fill the mouth with air. When you remove the tongue, the immediate rush of air through the whistle creates an enormous burst of sound. Then you need to flip the whistle over your top lip to allow for the shrill at the end. Simple isn't it? I'll get Steve Clark to respond with his version as requested.
