Egypt Name: Kari Anderson/Egypt
The General Assembly
Fighting AIDS

The General Assembly,

UNAIDS is the joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS. The main goals of the UNAIDS is to support and help the world know about HIV and AIDS. Also, another goal of the UNAIDS is to prevent HIV and AIDS and provide care, money, and support to those who have this horrible disease.

In the United Nations, the World Health Organization had the responsibility of AIDS so therefore they created UNAIDS to help with HIV and AIDS. During the 1990s, AIDS was increasing and many more people had this life threatening disease. The economy became affected by AIDS and the United Nations set out to make a plan in order to fight this terrible disease.

I. Expresses Deep Concern

(A) Egypt is very concerned with AIDS. AIDS is very life threatening in Egypt. Many men and women have AIDS and when a woman with AIDS becomes pregnant there is yet another life born with AIDS. Women and men need to be educated about AIDS and how to prevent this life threatening disease.

(B) Egypt knows that the United Nations has and is doing a wonderful job in dealing with AIDS, but AIDS is even a bigger problem now then it was back when it was first discovered. A cure has not been found for AIDS and the number of people with AIDS has increased and so does the number of deaths each day.

(C) Since 1996, there has been 1,155 cases of AIDS. Not all of the cases of AIDS have been within Egypt. There were 420 people out of the 1,155 people that were from different places around the world. There were a total of 735 Egyptians that were affected with AIDS in 1996 and out of those 735 Egyptians, 350 of them died. (Information found at-http://www.aegis.com/news/afp/1999/AF990743.html)

II. Is Aware That

(A) Egypt is aware that AIDS is one of the life threatening diseases that kill thousands of people every day.

(B) Egypt is also aware that a number of organizations have been created in order to help fight AIDS. In 1982, The United States of America created many voluntary organizations to help AIDS. Many different reports indicate that AIDS did not only occur in the United States of America but in other countries as well. In earlier years AIDS was known as “slim”. “Slim” is the African form of AIDS. (Information found at-http://www.avert.org/his8186.htm)

(C) A third thing Egypt is aware of is that there is being Conferences held about AIDS to find out ways to help it. Egypt knows that there was the first International Meeting on AIDS in 2000. This International Meeting was held in Atlanta and the three major topics were the extent of heterosexual transmission, the situation with regard to AIDS internationally, and the new HTLV-III/LAV test. Other topics were discussed at the Conference in order to help AIDS.

III Recommends

(A) That the Security Council:
1. One solution that Egypt feels that the UN should put more money aside just for AIDS Foundations.

2. A second solution Egypt feels that the UN should also put more money aside to help researchers discover a cure for AIDS and medicines on how to make it better.

3. A third solution that Egypt recommends is the UN should spend more quality time teaching teenagers and children about having unprotected sex or having sex with someone who has AIDS.

4. A fourth solution that will help is the UN should spend more money and more time on teaching children and teenagers the consequences of having AIDS.

5. A fifth solution that Egypt recommends is there should be support groups and meetings where people with AIDS can talk about there feelings and their emotions.

6. A sixth solution that Egypt suggests is that there should be more hospitals and treatment centers for people in need.

7. A seventh solution that Egypt supports is there should be more money put aside to families with family members that have AIDS and who are unable to work.
