Well, H, I hope you get to go back when you feel better. Yes, some areas of India are reallly VERY rural and primitve still and pretty "out there" in other ways as well. Reality is a different construct there and I can see just how people dialog here, wanting a linear black-and-white answer, but then we're Westerners. There are also others who claim to be Babaji, and some of these stories are getting mixed up, but it doesn't really matter. Bhole Baba (if you want to call him that), one of his names, was definitely a very unconventional teacher, some of his stuff is VERY traditional Vedic, the fire ceremony, for example, some Tantric and at the same time he had an incredible understanding of the modern Westerner's life. As a great teacher (I will avoid more specific titles here) he was concerned about the world, actually the universe. (I've had two different dreams over the years in which he communicated some things to me about being focused now on some other worlds, other types of people with different languages than on earth) He gave teachings for the world, some specifics to people who were there longer (they even have trouble doing them sometimes too) Everything is rather subjective, but I do not think it fair to say he couldn't stand hippies. (he took someone's LSD and passed it out to villagers, nothing happened) But no , he was not like Osho Rajneesh. He loved everyone, if they had to suffer too much karma by staying there, he would send them away or if he couldn't discipline some of them enough, but they were so devoted (I hate to stereotype, but this included a lot, but not all, Italians) he tried to find a sadhana for them. His ideal sadhana is very strict and goes on all day long, including little sleep. When he was there, get up by 4am and take bath in river (but it was better to be up even earlier because later the wind came and it cut like a knife when you had to get out of river in 40 degrees (F) and had wet clothes, because particularly for women, one didn't dare expose anything to an Indian and therefore Indians bathe in their clothes and you know about wet clothes. but keeping mind focused of course. Work average of 6 hrs. a day, lots of times hauling stones and dirt, though sometimes a festival. Chant, meditate, Only one meal a day (we hoped for a bit of vegetable) until about '80 when he made it a bit easier for people to stay there, also had to sleep on concrete, hopefully you brought a pad with you. - Again later there were wooden beds. People were exhausted in their bodies, but minds got quiet and open and he was there with you, working over your karma, transofrming you, showing you possibilities never imagined. He scolded, yes, at times, even hit people with the stick (most loved it, loved any energy from him) but after the initial work-through, if you had the karma to stay, it was 90% bliss. If a Western ashram is run decently, it is not quite so strict, and not quite so earth-shaking, but still powerful. One may be surprised to know that he did initiate at least one devotee I know about into Kriya yoga (at devotee's request), gave others some other practices, something tailored to YOU), told someone how many kriyas to do, etc. But when you have so much bliss, felt as if you had found the Garden of Paradise, most people did not ask for anything else. Indeed when he would ask people what they want, most seemed to feel they already had everything they wanted. The more interesting question to ask would not be, is he the same Babaji as in AY, but Who in the bleep is he and Who are You? I got a few "you gos" of varying intensity and had to face spending night alone in jungle once, but I made it through that, as did others. (phew, it was very scary due to wild animals AND working with that rejection energy inside you, YOUR rejection/blocks of the Divine). One of the coolest things that we miss, is the ability to communicate telepathically with someone like him, other teachers do it some, but nowhere near like he was doing, a lot of the time, with a lot of people, at least from what I have heard and I have heard a lot. Ashram in USA of Bhole Baba and Neem Karoli Baba are about the same distance apart as the ones in India and they cooperate some - NKB Ashram/ Hanuman Temple seems to use more lentils so they get the extra donations from Babaji Ashram in USA. Both of these places have ever increasing visitors in good weather and now even in bad.
I love how one person said it: "he pretended to be one of us in order to help."
Follow your heart, the guru within.
