Re: CT Post: Puma's Predictions in 2006 -- Observer, 07:57:59pm 01/01/06 Sun, [1]
Sacred Heart would beat Fairfield this season. It would be close, but SHU would win.

Fairfield vs Sacred Heart -- JoeStag, 08:42:00am 01/03/06 Tue, [1]
Certainly SHU is improved this year, and I think their entire talent level is up. They just lost to Miami (FL) last night by only 63-57. But even with their success and us in a down year so far, SHU has all of 2 more wins than us (4-7), while playing 2 more games..... and their SOS is at 247 and ours at 128 ranking.
But it still would be a good game. IMO, who would win depends if they are playing our team without Max and MOS or with them. I think SHU and us would matchup evenly with our team without Max. I think with Max we are a much better team. But, thats why we should play the game...... determine who is better on the court.
Puma's Fairfield-SHU prediction was also coupled with a Mets World series win and a Bears Super Bowl. Obviously long shot predictions like this are intended to get a reaction.
But the important part of this whole story is that Puma has sent the message that we don't want to play SHU, and thats not good publicity. And interpret the reason any way you want.... of why we don't want to play SHU, the bottom line of how this is viewed by non-Fairfield fans is that we are afraid to play them. It might not be the real reason..... but it is sure the perception.
Another perception is that we play at a higher level than SHU, and even though the reality is the MAAC much higher than the NEC, I don't think the average fan knows that or believes that. Perception is more powerful thatn reality. 3 examples of this perception:
- That was evident in last weeks Stamford Advocate story by saying their is more than UCONN basketball.... we were grouped with the non-UCONN like SHU, QU, CC, Hart, Yale
- Puma's prediction that shows that its the W-L's that count, that means SHU must be better.
- Today's story that says SHU goes 3-0 against MAAC teams, and just one of those games has been close..... women that is
And why don't our Women play SHU????????
Play the games, its sports...... not war.
