So I will admit to more knowledge of Star Wars than I ought and point out further mimetic rivalries in the Saga. All the apprentice-mentor relationships seem to reflect the double bind which Girard desribes in Things Hidden: "Yet if the imitation is too perfect, and the imitator threatens to surpass the model, the master will completely change his attiude and begin to display jealousy, mistrust and hostility. He will be tempted to everything he can to discredit and discourage his disciple." Girard places most of the blame for the violence of the rivalry in the master (in this quote), but I think Star Wars provides several examples where it is the pupil's ambition which spurs the conflict: Darth Vader and Ben Kenobi and the Emeperor and Vader are the two most obvious examples.
