Ever since the first time I heard this song I though it was intriguing. The first time I heard it I was confused about what was going on (this might have been due to my age at the time or maybe just trying to understand the lyrics for the first time). I think your analysis of this is great. I can definitely see the connection between the “friends” in the song and Paolo and Francesca. I think the whole idea of the rumors serving as the model is very interesting. It makes sense that they would be motivated by the rumors because they are coming from an outside source that can see more of what is going on. With rumors there are really only two options – ignore or approve. Through psychology classes I’ve taken in the past I’ve learned how influential repetition is. So if someone keeps hearing a rumor after awhile they will likely start to think about how it could be true. It’s kind of like Oedipus with the prophecy – he doesn’t want it to come true but he ends up being the one figuring out how it could come true. So in this case the rumors are repeated often enough that they begin to think they could be true.
