You're right, I love that movie but I haven't watched it since we began this class so I hadn't thought about Frank. Another interesting fact about the movie is that Dwayne, the son who assumes a vow of silence until he is accepted as an air force test pilot, is obsessed with the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. He has a banner type poster of him hanging in his bedroom and as the family takes their road trip, he is reading some of Nietzsche's writings. His interest in Nietzsche goes largely unnoticed or ignored by the rest of the family, but when Frank comes to live with the family he is intrigued. When he asks why Dwayne doesn't talk he points to his poster of Nietzsche to which Frank simply replies: "Is that Nietzsche? You don't speak because of Friedrich Nietzsche? Far out." It seems we can't get away from Nietzsche or Proust. :)
